Large Red Damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula)
Body length: 25 - 30 mm
The Large Red Damselfly has a synchronized emergence and is usually
the first species to be recorded each year. It can be seen from mid
April to early September. Males have a deep red coloration with a
black and red-striped thorax and red abdomen. The thorax is yellow
or yellow-striped on the underside in young specimens. Both sexes
have red eyes, duller in females, and the female has more black on
the abdomen. The Large Red Damselfly is not a very active species,
preferring to spend most of its time flying around its territory
and settling periodically on marginal and emergent vegetation around
ponds and slow moving water. Mating takes place in marginal vegetation
and the pair lay their eggs in tandem on submerged vegetation.

I never seen one of these beauties before. Dragon flies and Damsels are my favorite insects. they are always beautiful and do not bite humans, at least me. It must have been on a slow day to let you get so close head on-v
