David Putnam House... Historical Underground Railroad Site ...1808 - 1892
This home is located in Marietta Ohio. It is historical because it was the one of the safe houses for the Underground Railroad. David Putnam was a conductor on the Underground Railroad and leader of the Abolishinist movement in Marietta Ohio. He hid slaves in various locations including his home. Putnam lived to celebrate the success of the abolishinist movement. He lived to see slavery abolished.
This picture was taken by my son. With thanks to ebsmooth who has inspired him to take photos.
This house has been many things over the years. When I was a young girl it was a grand home filled with antiques and displays. People used to have partys there. I attended one there with my mother when I was about 15. It was beautiful with beautiful grounds and gardens. Over the years it was a nursing home then finally the historical society took over it. It stands empty now but you can arrange tours.
Enjoy the picture and the history lesson and thanks for all your wonderful comments.
