Description

I believe this is a common carder bumble bee. I saw it land on a flower so i moved in close to get a shot it wasn't bothered by me at all. Then it started to act strange turning on it's side then like this it eventually fell off the flower and crawled away into the undergrowth. Does anyone have any idea why?

Really great action shot. To explain this behaviour I must assume this bumble-bee is ill. In spring a number of these insects get infected by a bacteria, it slowly kills them. First they have increasingly difficulties to fly. This bumblebee obvious couldn't fly away when it was scared by you. Next thing to do was the standard defensive "attack" role on the back; getting sting and legs in position. It lost balance and fell of the flower.
