Description

Gulvain Lochaber ^^/\^^ Shortly after this picture the cloud closed in and the view of the ridge leading up to the top was gone. We had five minutes stop at the top in thick cloud, a 13Km walk uphill for no view ...Humpht. As we set off to retrace our route back to the car, we somehow got separated, it was four hours before I seen him again! I ended up off the path, coming down the wrong way, and found myself on scary steep ground, full of jaggy crags looming up out the thick mist at me, and big drops all round...not nice! Lesson no 1... take a compass bearing sooner rather than later! I eventually navigated back to the path again and got back to the car where my mate was waiting. Wait for it..he had just arrived back too, having made exactly the same mistake as me! ~@~ Funny how things go, the day before this we had a marvelous day on the Gray Corries, best hillwalking for ages, then on the Sunday ...this happened, one of the scariest day on the hills for years! Still, its all good fun I suppose.

Beautiful landscape - but I can imagine it isn't the ideal place to be caught out in thick fog... (but then again - where is?). Glad to hear you made it down without incident!

Beautiful "Gulvain" Mountain and such a great place for a hike. Absolutely no room for mistakes while on this mountain ridge that you stand on. So far, I've been lucky without a compass but I do know how important a compass is. Besides a compass, I do plan to get a gps and a walky-talky too. Your adventures are fabulous. Aloha

I love the way you go to those places untouched and faithfully record these events! Great reporting and you are doing Scottish tourism a big favour.

Afterwards it's fun but it's quite scary when you find yourself in the middle of a situation like this! Compass, and cell phone can add a lot, I carry even a whistle for emergencies! Excellent work!
