Description

I've worked around wood most of my life, but have never seen this grain pattern occur on such a large scale before (this piece of wood is about the size of my hand). This was actually a piece that broke off of a block of red oak, and was going to end up being ground up as mulch, something made me pick it up and look at it. It now resides on my bookshelf. It's even square on the end so it stands upright.

Alien wood? There must be somebody that can tell why it looks like that! It is hard to get the scale of it... maybe a coin or pen in the picture for size refrence!

Tomorrow I'm going to post a pic of it on my bookshelf. It should give you a rough idea of scale- 5 1/2 inches/14 cm tall x 3 inches/7 cm wide.
