Atalanta was an athlete, huntress, and professional virgin. Her father wanted a boy, so he left her on the mountainside. There she was found and suckled by a bear. This made her amazingly strong. She grew into a beauty, and had many suitors. She promised to marry the first man who could beat her in a foot race. The catch was that if she won, she got to kill the loser. And she always won. One day, Aphrodite,displeased at Atalanta's coldness, gave Melanion three golden apples. He challenged her to a race, and whenever she seemed about to catch him, he would toss an apple. The silly girl would stop to chase it, and thereby lost the race. The two were married. This is my rendition of the "tamed" Atalanta contemplating the instrument of her capture. Was it worth it?
