Description


This is the second image in my attempt to create convincing engine nozzles complete with plasma glow stylee exhaust. Even though the thing's only got <8,000 faces, and 11 lights, two or three dozen renders of this will see my computer crashing so I don't know what it's going to be like when i've modelled the entire project :|. Still, now I've got this far, I can go to bed :D. More coming soon! :)

I would suggest moving your light sources deeper into the nozzle and making the blue less mottled. Look at a high energy source and it usually will be "clean". th emottling almost suggests impurities in the system. Just a thought... HTH

I would say to set up the scale you want and do the final render in layers. Layers are how most of the pro's do it and it helps when only one thing needs change in the final, then all you do is fix that layer. Also try dropping down the number of lights as from what I see above only 6 lights are needed for this section. Soften the shadow on the main light to get more detail showing on the model . Hope this helped

Excellent work! I concur with shayhurs, moving the light sources deeper into the nozzles. In the case of plasma engines, you want the glow to be stronger behind the engine rear grating, and only increase the external glow when the engines are running hard.

My advice: 11 lights? too many...you dont need that. Even when you have 11 things that seem to be admiting light. (Self illuminating is good for most of it..unless you have 11 lights that specificaly need to be casteing shadows) Each light really increase's render times/cpu usage. Hmz...I hope your not using volumetrixs either for those glows.

The lights were creates as per the "engine glow" tutorial on 3Dcafe (i think it was 3dcafe), which used one light for the ambient blue glow and another light for the much more intense glow in the center closer to the nozzle. Now My thinking is that I should be able to simply have the light intense at the center and let it drop off to a dull glow gradually without having to have two lights - right? As for volumetrics, if you mean volume lights? (I only know how to do things i've done in tutorials), yes, they are volume lights. Is this bad?
