Description

My daughter decided she wanted to play guitar last December. She proceeded to throw herself into it, practicing thru the pain in her fingers, waking up two hours before school so she can practice and never giving up no matter how angry or frustrated she became. Tuesday, she played an open mic to a pretty large room. She played very well, sang very well, never faltered (she wasn't nervous until she heard the quality of the other musicians. then she wanted me to do the vocals). She's 11, and i'm crazy proud of her talent and her determination. My wife took the photo, she didn't use a flash because she didn't want Shannon to feel like the geek kid who's parents were all about making her feel awkward. So we wound up with very poorly exposed pics with lots of camera shake. Little photoshop work produced this image. Green channel had a nice B&W feel, levels adjustment, shadows/highlights, sharpen, an aged photo action i picked up from the adobe website, the consequent new layer set to 50% transparency, all knowing i'd be saving it for web so the noise from compression could only help the mood. Has a nice 60's feel to it, i think.

Most excellent situation there (love to see parents encouraging this sort of thing). I wish her luck and many happy years playing and singing. As for the photo itself, I don't think it should have been any other way. The effects you got without a flash are really unique. Like you said, looks like something out of the 60s. :) Well done.

Im so sorry I am so far behind. Im trying hard to catch up and busily slaying e-bots!! (What else is new??) Until I can get caught up, Im still going to mostly just be leaving behind my calling card. But Id also like to leave a suggestion with everyone. In the three months Ive been here at Renderosity, Ive made a huge number of wonderful friends that really mean the world to me. And Id like to share a technique with everyone. Take a minute each day and have a look at Whats New. Pick out the work of someone you dont know, pop it open and have a nice little look at what they have done. And dont just look at people that do the same things as you. Pick from all the different categories and programs. You will learn a lot and youll get new ideas for postings. This cross pollination will help us build more robust hybrid art. All of the Old Masters in art history spent a great deal of time learning from the Old Masters of their day AND from each other. If we do the same, our work will continue to get better and better. And sometimes pick someone that is just starting out and give them a hand share YOUR knowledge with a newcomer. And then send them a brief IM. Introduce yourself and tell them how much you like their work. Just by making the introduction, youve just taken the MOST IMPORTANT step toward making a new friend!!! Everyone will learn from each other and each new friendship is one more stitch in this Tapestry of Friends that is Renderosity!!! SO MAKE ONE NEW FRIEND EACH DAY!!! Love, Meredith PS - Great photo and great processing - it really sets the mood!! And congratualtions to your daughter. Performing can be tough!

Just loved this image even before I read your words... as my son too plays the guitar ( his second "real" guitar was a combined middle school graduation/multi -holiday many birthdays worth of gifts in the form of a Martin.... I have been assurred my stairway to music heaven is already in place by my adult friends who are musicians!), and also handbells between the ages of 12 and now, I know the pride you feel as well as the frustration you have helped Shannon work through . It is a marvel to see and hear them find their way, and a mixed blessing to help guide and support with an even hand... sounds like you are all thriving in this new endeavor... How wonderful!
