Every once in a while Aret likes to dress up as a butterfly,
here hes dressed up as a Cabbage White.... ;o)
-
Cabbage White also called Small White, Pieris rapae.
Length 40 - 50mm. Perhaps the most abundant European butterfly.
Originally only distributed in the Palaearctic, it has now been
introduced with vegetables to many parts of the world. The small
white often causes serious damage to agricultural and horticultural
produce. It is well adapted to life in agricultural habitats and
can be found in warm lowlands as well as in the high mountains.
One to three generations occur, depending on climatic conditions.
In central Europe there are usually two generations which, being
somewhat different in size and pattern, are an example of seasonal
polyphenism. The caterpillars feed on crucifers but also on
mignonette, Tropaeolum, etc. The chrysalis hibernates.
-
Oh btw... read 'Aret Podipel' backwards.... you get 'lepidoptera'.
The Lepidoptera is the second largest order of insects comprising
butterflies, skippers, and moths. Lepidopterans (members of this order)
go through a four-stage life cycle of egg

Your photos are always fantastic but this one means a little more to me. A long time ago my daughter wrote a story about a butterfly called "Whitey". We lived in the delta region of central California and our car was always plastered with these guys. I never once saw one alive up close. Just bits and pieces here and there. Thanks for sharing this one. J
