Description

Mars 2125: after many years of pumping greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, the terraforming process at last begins to show fruit - the first vegetation starts to grow. Thanks to Markal for the excellent "2049 Valles" terrain and thank you for viewing :-)

It's a beautiful render, but sadly Mars does not have enough gravity to support an atmosphere.

Mars already has an atmosphere, albeit a thin one that comprises 95% CO2. By introducing enough greenhouse gasses and photosynthetic bacteria the planet could eventually be terraformed, probably over millenia.

I think we have a physics problem here. If oxygen is being pumped into the atmosphere then it's going to be lighter than the CO2. This leads me to think would start growing on the high points of the land, not down in the low parts. Now if it was a planet with a too high oxygen content and CO2 was being added, then I'd expect life to start in the low parts like in this picture. Are you sure this planet is Mars? :)

Nobody said anything about pumping Oxygen into the atmosphere, that's for the plants to do.

First of all, this is excellent work. Amazing sky and fantastic surfaces. You made good use of this cool terrain. Second, CO2, is I believe, a "greenhouse" gas, which Steve points out is present on Mars. Yes, CO2 is heavier than most gases and so would tend to be in higher concentration nearer the ground. So this pic has some science going for it because lower means warmer, and denser air and less UV radiation (Plants use C02 to make sugars and then cellulose therefrom) The real problem, I think is available water. Great concept, Steve!

I think I will submit the mathematical part to my son.. he is studying chemical engineering.. I like the image however, particularly the atmo/sky s

I wish we all could be here to witness this event. More dollars spent on this instead of warfare would be money well spent. I'm getting off track here and really mean to say thank you Steve for this beautiful creation!
