This photo was taken in 1968, in Iran, near the town of Maku, just across the border with Turkey. I was on my way East, a three-and-a-half months travel which ended in Kathmandu, Nepal. I was hitchhiking with a companion from Brighton, England, whom I met in Munich, Germany. I am sitting on the hood of this Mercedes, that would take us to Teheran. From there I travelled by any means available through Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and I run a small literary publishing firm.

Thanks for these images of a fabulous place. Perhaps I'll have the luck one day to see it of my own eyes...

Thank you George for sharing this historical place. It is amazing that some of these places have withstood the ravages of time and are still very beautiful. I look forward to your future work.

Its amazing that to cultures such Greece and Turkey so close to each other have had there differnces for 2500+ years and at times still going strong at it, but in reality they are all brothers in there ancestory line, the villages and islands that border greece and turkey in the agean and there inhabitants usually live in harmony its the political mish mash that usually creates the problems! By the way excellent photo collection.

Witness of a long past culture. I wonder if somebody will remember ours in 3000 years. Beautiful capture!
