Description

I'm not sure how widespread Canada geese have become .... probably a good portion of the northern and central United States are familiar with them. But for those who have never seen them in flight... they form a distinctive "V" formation. There is one leader and any number of followers... the followers forming the two-line "V" behind the one who supposedly knows where he's going. Or maybe the lead goose is a she... I'll have to do more research on this... ;)

Anyway... invariably, one of the lines in the "V" is longer than the other. Several weeks ago the tell-tale honking (they can be very loud) of Canada geese moving overhead brought me out of the house to watch their flight pattern. My husband wandered out of the garage at the same time and asked, "Do you know why one side of the "V" is longer than the other?" Thinking that he'd just heard some enlightening, scientific news to that effect on the garage radio, I was eager to learn more. "No" I answered... "Do you??" "Yes" said he... "It's because there are more geese in the longer line." Sheesh... LOL!

UF3 with frame and sig in PSP. I made the feathers a long time ago using KPT5's FiberOptix ... and they have always been available for download from my homepage here at Renderosity. Thanks so very much for your views and feedback on my previous efforts... and thank you for stopping in to have a peek at this one! Hugs! Helen :)

Awesome story and beautiful image! We see them in my neck of the woods too... lovely creatures in flight and a telltale signal of winter coming or going! ;-)

Love the look of folded cloth. Enjoyed your husband's scientific observation. But more than Canada Geese I see this image as very Moulin Rouge.

Your image is sensational! I love the color and the composition! Now the mother goose usually leads the flock, and the father stays to the rear to make sure none of the babies get lost... Often the babies get mixed up and stray into the wrong family. I once saw a couple have five babies, and by the end of the summer they had 9... The geese are excellent parents who will face any enemy to protect their young... Excellent image!!!

I agree with artice: "a visual delight"! The tiny formations are brilliant, and I love the overall composition. Wonderful colors and detail and light..and the textures are perfect. Outstanding and beautiful work, dear lady!

Hi Helen, a beautiful design and a fitting tribute to a well-travelled and beautiful bird. We have Canada geese over here in the UK. I've heard that they take it in turns to be leader. Very democratic. No-one knows for sure if they navigate by landmarks or the stars, or a mixture of both. hugs

Hey, maybe I'm last! That means I get to ramble on without worrying about who comes next. I would hope that there would be many visitors to this glorious image but things sometimes work weird around here. I'm feeling almost human tonight so I'll go visit your new one as well. Being about 100 miles or so from the border we see Canadian geese all the time. They fly really low sometimes and certainly can make quite a racket. They don't seem to have as good an aim as seagulls do though, and considering how big they are that's something to be thankful for. The colors here are terrific, your knack for generating this glow from within lighting is amazing, as is the magnificently textured background and the sharpness and relief of the bird forms. Lovely work here, these birds have certainly been working on flying complex patterns!
