Description

Took a drive to Saint Michaels, MD and then on to Tighlman Island. At the southmost point of the island we stopped to get out and see what was on the Chesapeake Bay. Not much. Or was there? Suddenly I began to 'feel' drums and got this creepy feeling from the movie Master and Commander when Russell Crowe is trying to determine whether or not there is a ship out there. There definitely was something out there today, but we could not get a good look. Two large sails were obvious, or were they. It kept tacking and turning into the mist so we could not get a good look. Finally decided to shoot images to analyze later. Problem: The visibility was so bad that the image in the viewfinder at 10X could not 'see' anything except water. Using the LCD screen was worse: too bright. Finally decided to 'shoot the works' at 10X and then to do the same at maximum using the car as a tripod/stabilizer. 10X was a bust... just water. Only one 32x image came out and here it is. Thought it was a big topsail schooner, but that did not look quite right. Figured it was a hybrid: brigantine or barkentine tending towards the larger. This is a lot bigger than the usual pleasure boats around here. I estimate this is about 5 miles out in the shipping channel. I know of no local legends involving a 'Flying Dutchman.' Enjoy; thanks for viewing. Postwork was mostly contrasts to bring out the fact there really is a ship out there. Mystery ship identified: Gazela Primiero out of Philly. A Barkentine. http://www.gazela.org/index.shtml
