Description

This is my best known piece. It originally appeared in DRAGON Magazine #124 as the inner "April Fool's" cover. DRAGON was then printed by TSR, the manufacturers of Dungeons and Dragons. They also published my first books. For the April Fool's use, this was titled "Player's Handbook II". The following year it served as the cover for TSR's mail order catalog. Longtime AD&D gamers will recognize the overall design is a parody of the original Players Handbook from the early 80s. I was into teddy bears at the time, or rather, "Hokas" (a creation of SF authors Gordon Dickson and Poul Anderson, used to parody other SF or mass media icons). And of course the demon of the fiery alter is Garfield, then in his fifth year or so. The runes on the brazier translate roughly "Cats are vicious little psycotics. Hail Garfield!" This particular image is restored from the aforementioned catalog cover. One of these days I need to re-paint the piece (I think I still have the original layouts somewhere arounfd here).

I remember this piece fondly. I still have a near-mint copy of that catalog, along with the one from next year, featuring your Hokas engaged in a full-scale assault of the TSR warehouse.

The original was an acrylic painting on matte board. It was about 30" high. I actually did two of them. The first was b/w but when Roger Moore wanted to use it for DRAGON, I did a color painting. After I sold that one at a GenCon, I went back and colored in the b/w copy. That sold at another SF con somewhere. Thanks for reminding me about the sequel, LD. I'll clean that one up and post that one soon.
