Description

There's probably a plethora of cannons here at Renderosity. This is a work in progress. I'm actually using this in live footage (which could get challenging), and I wanted it to be pretty accurate and realistic although taken liberty to change a few things. The animated model will be just as you see, however I will like to keep working on this model by adding more anchoring ropes, and even putting this within a fully modelled hull of a ship eventually. Created with C4D 9.1 XL, using those awesome Noctua Shaders, thanks Noctua! (http://www.noctua-graphics.de/)

Actually, I think mine and yours, and maybe one other are the only cannon on this site. I did mine about 2-3 years ago, as a start to a ship I was working on, haven't played with it since. Chx my gallery, and you can see an image of it...yours looks good, but maybe tone down the reflectivity of the barrel. They were painted (known as "blacked") black to protect against rust, and were more a dull tone than shiny. They were NEVER allowed to rust, contrary to what most people think when they critique an image of a cannon, they are used to seeing old fort cannons unprotected against corrossion. The proper way to care for a cannon back then was to "black" it. The carriage was usually painted as well, a yellow ocre as in the case of the HMS Victory, or a slight orange-red as on the USS Constitution. But your detail is good. Can you tell me how you did the rope? I am still trying to figure that out for my cannon and ship rigging...

It was hard to figure out how to do realistic rope and I still want to find something better, but I found some good rope here: http://www.ruimac.com/experiments/rope_in_water/riw_info.htm Big thanks go to Rui Batista! I tweaked the texture to suite my cannon better, darker, more yellow, deeper lines. I think I'll continue using that texture that Rui made until I can do one myself. Thanks for the tip on the Cannon "blacking" I have no idea about the history on such topic, great info! I'll keep that in mind, definitely, while I continue working on a scene for this cannon. :)

very nice cannon, I think the black on the barrel is a tad to shinny as well.

Try a free plugin called Reeper, the very thing for making rope! I think the place to go is www.codeworkers.de/reeper but I'm not 100% sure, "All the best" Steve
