Description

I modeled this compass for the C4D forum's Speed Modeling Sessions and although I didn't finish it within the allowed timeframe (3 hours) I continued working on it. This is the result. Edit: I've updated the image as I noticed a big mistake in the original design :)

Excellent modeling! Is this based on an actual compass or one that you created?

This is very very nice. I like how you paid attention to detail. The tiny imperfections in the metal make this look photoreal. Great job!

Thanks guys :) Perry6: It's based on an actual compass from www.brasscompass.com.

Very nice model Anders! The textures are typically excellent also. I know that it's a showcase render but I think that it looks a bit floaty due to the shadows. It doesn't look very "grounded". Bahhh ... who cares, it looks good!

It's good too see it finished. That was a fun challenge to do (as are all of them).

Thanks for the replies, people! 3D_E: Yes, the shadows does look a bit too soft... I will rerender with Area Shadows :)

trying to work out if the "big mistake" was the missing hole in the pointy bit at the front or the clasp on the lid. It's like playing "spot the difference"! Great model, nice D-ring;) - loved this challenge.

Alan42: You are right on both accounts, plus the fact that I had missed modeling the "opening" in the front of the lid :)

Amazing! Being a professional in a technical field that uses modern versions of such instruments, I particularly LOVE the antique-ish versions! I could see this image framend and hanging on the wall in my office.
