Description

One week until Spielberg's megabudget Americanization of the classic tale. I'm looking forward to seeing Pendragon Film's moodest but period version. And in the meantime, I'm listening to Jeff Wayne's rock musical adaptation. For some reason, "Thunderchld" still causes me to get sniffly. The classic encounter between state-of-the-art military technology against a hopelessly superior foe has been repeated time and again in cinema, but Wells' created the scene. Maybe the sacrifice of the Thunderchild affects me because the men aboard the dreadnaught really had no idea what they had just stepped into. There was no way to communicate with ships at sea, after all. Rather, the crew simply did what needed to be done. In the background, one Tripod explodes from the hammering of the Thunderchild's guns.... but a second Tripod's heat ray swings into readiness.....

Awesome work! I didn't know that there was anyone in the world who liked the Thunderchild song but me. Thank you for posting this one!

I've seen Pendragon's version. It's nice but obviously low budget. It appears to only be available on DVD so check Amazon.com.

Love the design of the tripods. Better than any I coudl come up with. I woudl liek to do the tripod like this in 3D it woudl be most excellent.

the tripods are supposed to be a big mystery until the movie comes out. I've done a version of this, but not nearly this good..;) keep it up.

Nice Image. The Martian Fighting Machine has a kind of semi-organic quality to it, more than the strictly mechanical look from the album cover. It just adds to its alien-ness. Did you create it in a 3d program first before exporting it to 2d or did you just make it in 2d from the start?

It's a painting! I created it first on a piece of paper, then transfered the drawing to a sheet of illustration board. The painting was then done in Liquitex acrylics, with a black Sharpie marker used for the rigging.

Awesome rendition! Great imagination of this classic scene. This past weekend I saw Spielberg's version (twice!). Prior to that, I read the H.G. Wells' novel and also listened (repeatedly) to Jeff Wayne's musical version. I wish something like this scene had been in the movie but it isn't. And I hated the bit of unnecassary (and divergent from the novel) murder they put into it with the cellar scene.

I have the poster of the Jeff Wayne version and this is as good as. I thought Spielberg's version was very overrated.

Wow the work and sweat that must have went into this is mind boggling! Amazing work and such an organic alien feel to it! Takes me back when I first got into role playing games during the 80's! So cool!
