Description

This is the first in a series of Tiki images I'll be posting over the next several days. Ever since I spent three years living on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu, Tikis have a held a certain fascination for me. The giant carved statues with their fearsome countenances seem otherworldly and strangely animated to me. Perhaps this fascination goes back even further to when I saw the Brady Bunch episode where the family takes a trip to Hawaii and Bobby finds a Tiki statue that supposedly puts a curse on the family. Who knows. What I do know is the one time I visited the big Island of Hawaii back in the early 80s, and took some Polaroid pictures of some Tiki statues, every one of them came out with strange ghosted images swirling around the upright forms. Spooky. =o] Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this little diversion. I'd like to dedicate this series to my Hawaiian buddies sharky, Punaguy and thevolunteer. Thank you for posting wonderful photos that take me back to one of the best times of my life. --Kort Olympus C8080 & PhotoshopCS ----- Tiki -by Sett Moon A Tiki is a carving shaped to resemble a god or spirit. Tikis are known throughout the South Pacific and Hawaiian islands mainly, but all seem to share the same purpose. Tikis are said to house spirits; each Tiki contains in it it's very own spirit. No two spirits are alike. In earlier times, Maori women used to wear a phallus-shaped charm round their necks, called tiki, to protect them against barrenness. (from pantheon.org)

A splendid display and History...and the Tiki still plays a major role in Maoridom...but...has become very Commercialized and hardly ever looks like a Woody anymore...salute

Nice composite! Across the street from me is a house with a Tiki bar in the basement. 8' ceiling, 7' Tiki statues flanking the bar. The classy seafood restaurant on Milwaukee's lakefront started off in the '60s as a Polynesian restaurant, which explains the Tiki statues still flanking the entry.

Mahalo Kort for the dedi...if the series starts out like this, I can't wait for the rest! We don't have many carved tiki's in big town Hilo, gotta go to the Kona side (west) of the island to get a glimpse of these. These are just great...Right on Braddah, bring it on! Aloha~

Interesting capture. I've never seen these types of Tiki's before. As a youth, I use to carve Tiki to wear on the neck. I made a whole bunch of them but later lost interest in making them. Thanks for the memories and dedi. Aloha

Thanks for the dedication. Yes, Kona side of the island has most of the Tiki's. I love to reach out and touch them. Love the way different wood leaves different expressions. Aloha
