They are back !! :D One of the most beautiful bees ive ever seen :o)
Andrena flavipes
Quite a big mining bee, reaching a length of 10 to 13 mm. Males and females
are quite similar, except for the hairs on the head. These are whitish grey
in males and reddish brown in females. So the animal in the picture is a
male. This species is not at all specialized: all flowers will be visitid
and checked for the presence of nectar. The species has two generations a
year. The spring generation, seen mainly in April and May, is usually bigger
than the summer generation (July and August).
This is a common species all over Europe. It is spreading northwards
nowadays... it recently reached Sweden. It is not known whether this has
got anything to do with global warming.
Andrena flavipes is a solitary bee, like all mining bees. Solitary
bees have no 'workers' and each female builds only a small nest, which she
stocks with a large quantity of pollen... enough to provide all the food
needed by her future offspring. After laying her eggs, the female bee seals
and abandons the nest and soon dies, leaving her offspring to develop on
their own.
Have a wonderful sunday !! :o)
