Date Joined: 8 August 2002 Hello My name is Daniel O'Byrne, ÂÂ
The belief that a good photograph is the result of a good camera places the importance upon the equipment rather than upon the photographer. It emphasizes the machine rather than the man, the tool rather than the artist, the technology rather than the artistic intent. It is as if Monet had been told that the reason why his paintings were so beautiful was because he had such good paintbrushes. Or as if Paul Bocuse’s culinary excellence was explained away by his use of superlative pots and pans. Or again if Yo-Yo Ma had been informed that his Stradivarius was solely responsible for the stunning quality of his music.ÂÂ
One can be inspired and have an idea, be very creative in making this idea into a work of art, have developed the required level of craftsmanship, without the outcome of one’s efforts being motivated by the desire to follow a vision for one’s entire body of work. Vision is an overriding envelope that encompasses both inspiration and creativity. It is a blanket that covers the entire artist’s work, a blanket that often comes later in the life of an artist, after one has perfected one’s art and moved beyond the commonplace outcome that most artists have to go through. For this reason I placed vision as the third step of this process. I placed it there not because it comes necessarily at the end of the process but because in life it is often something that artists discover later on.
ÂÂ
Certainly, a master needs a masterful instrument, be it a camera, paintbrushes, pots and pans or a violin, as in my examples, or other tool, since this list can be expanded to include many other professions. But to say that the quality of the art is caused solely by the quality of the instrument is to miss the point altogether about the importance of the artist. It is missing the point about the human factor, about the man or the woman that actually made use of this instrument. After all, art is made by artists and not by tools. Tools are inanimate objects that need someone to set them in motion. And to set a tool in motion so that art is created through the use of this tool, an artist is needed.

Dear Danny, I can remember that day that you took this shot, it was by castle Hoensbroek when you visited me here in Holland last February. We al saw a person in there, A fireman....no doubt....maybe it has a reason, who knows....I was so happy that you phones me after I text you......I was really worried when I saw all the news on TV....but after I hear your voice I was sure that you was safe......My deepest sympathy goes to all the people that lost their lives in London by the terrorist attack, and to all others !! I wish all people a lot strength, because it is a real disaster.....it will be a hard time.......This shows how important it is to have friends.... Life can be end so soon, so make each day count.... Danny, our heritage and spirit has, and will, bring us through all adversities. We have strength, we have courage, we have truth, we have (relative) democracy. We have been through times of war and have arisen as the victors...but then we knew who our enemies were and as evil as they were at least they knew when they were beaten into submission. We open our doors to the abused from other nations in the belief that they accept our unconditional kindness and support...no other country supports Human Rights as we in the UK do. To abuse us will only create an uprising of anger and the desire for revenge. But we must retain our dignity and the belief that we shall not be slaves to violence. We are better than that...have faith my friend. Pete

Danny, I sit here for the longest time and have no "proper" words. I cry for you and with you. I wish Churchill were still here to guide us for he saved the world much like God saved mankind. Bless you all and know that we love you. Tom

I would like to think these fireworks celebrate the brave work of the emergency services in saving so many lives to day & also celebrate our freedom as a nation. My heart goes out to the families of the victims, but also to the families of those who lose there lives every day in countries such as Iraq & Afghanistan, while they attempt to create a society with all the freedoms that we enjoy, and will continue to enjoy, in the face of the extremist coward.

It is hard to believe that in this day and age we are no more a civilized world than we were then. We are just more technical about it. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful words of Churchill. Our world is becoming more and more violent. It is seen all around us; not just in acts of terrorism. My heart goes out to all who died and were injured in your land at the hands of such evil people/animals.

The cynical battlespace of signs watched cheaply glares at the purpose of man. Others torn, shattered lie on the ground, Glasnost, perestroika... It was 25 years ago I recalled the lessons of the IRA terror, "never let your bomb go unexploded, set up your headquarters across from the main police station, hide your homemade rockets in a dog cart" to avoid the paranoia of the cocaine wars. There is a no man's land for the citizen where both sides take lethal swipes at him but none succeed because they are so focussed on their hate for each other. Into that breech I walked and rode my motorcycle, stopping at all the dairy roads, finding the ancient Rolls Royce Silver Ghost just off Flagler on 8th street not 8th avenue. Entering the Christian book shop on the square with the Churchill tank on the green to look at a copy of Bullinger's "Numbers".

I must say that the more appropriate words today would be "the UNDERestimated sum of human pain" for the reverberations of what is occuring worldwide will affect many generations to come. Such a legacy cannot go unchecked for the toll it's taking upon our little ones will set the future. Thank you for quoting this incredible historic figure and it's a shame that half a century later, it still holds true. Let the next half century see an end to terrorism/war through our vigilance today! I spoke with my husband yesterday, an officer in the US Navy, and his words: "We are ready to aid our British comrades at the word!" Our hearts and thoughts are with you!

Moving words, Danny, and it's hard to see it all happening! Beautiful tribute!

Such a beautiful capture and such a sad state of our being and times. It really breaks my heart to see the horrors that we bring upon to our earth and the senless killings for whatever belief they do it for. We are all one and a life is a life and that IS always a loss.

Dear Danny. It's so difficult to find words to qualify these terrorist acts, this cowardice without comparison. As all of you I am under the shock of what it occurred to London, and of course Danny, I also thought to you, and your friends and your family, and I was really happy that you appear on RR... If it was possible to stop the human madness, if the men could understand that they are the worst species on this planet. If we could spend as much of energy and of money for right causes and peace... humanity would go really better !!! Splendid these words of Churchill, and it would be said that they were written yesterday.... All my thoughts fo you Danny, and please, take care of you.
