Description

This is a little late for the July 4th holiday, but it seemed fitting to post today. My thoughts and prayers to those in London. When I first came to the U.S., I was surprised at the response I received to the question, "What nationality are you?" People would answer anything but "American", most responding with their ethnic heritage rather than the fact that they were born American. Since then, I have been searching for those people who do take pride in their country and the fact that they are first and foremost Americans no matter where their ancestors came from and need no other labels to tag along with it. It also makes me wonder if this is the case in other countries as well... do people say they are English, Canadian, Italian, Dutch, even if their ancestors came from somewhere else? My character and texture for Victoria 3. Koz Long Hair (short style) Background is from SXC. Lighting DNA Soft Pinks. Composition done in PSP 8.

i grew up in a bi-lingual house, my mother spoke polish because her grandmother spoke no english. she and her husband came here for a better life, to escape from the impending war and troubles of their time. my grandfather wouldn't have faced the trials he did had he changed his all too polish name, but he wouldn't dishonor his parents or his heritage. he considered himself american, as did all his family, and a large family it was. but he never thought it would be right to sacrifice his heritage, his roots, his family. we still honor the polish traditions that my great grandmother kept, my children are the first generation to not hear polish spoken regularly, if at all. I've always been proud to be polish american. Does that make me less american? The values i learned from my polish catholic family and upbringing have earned me respect and success in my life. are they somehow less worthy for being based on my ethnic heritage? My wife is a blueblood, and thru her my daughters are in the DAR. My wife's family is scattered to the four winds and she cannot rely on them anymore than she can rely on a cat. We hardly see her family. My family will be there no matter what, no matter where, and there will be lots of them, and the food will be excellent. my great-grandmother brought stories and histories as old as europe, america's history is glorious, but relatively short. I was always taught one of america's greatest strengths is the "melting pot", the intermingling of diverse cultures. that diversity is because people hold on to and celebrate their cultural heritage. What an awful stale place this would be if all those cultures homoginized and became some sort of american McCulture, 400 million served to mediocrity by ol' ray croc. all of the latin americans, european americans, african americans, middle eastern americans, asian americans add their own unique part to this american tune. it's beautiful. It's something to be proud of and i for one celebrate it.

I was born in Ludwigsburg Germany, and had dual citizenship until I was 18, then I had to choose my "Home" country. I am an american by choice of where I live, but I also celebrate my German heritage. By definition, all Americans came from "Some where else" Unless you are a Native American, we are all from over the pond. I think what makes us stronger as Americans, is when we celebrate our unique immigrant traditions. We are the ultimate melting-pot, we are all people, we are ONE people. Someday we will stop using those titles, and simply go by "The human race". That will be a very good day. Great piece.

My family lines have been in the United States for so many generations that trying to trace back has been difficult. When asked what my heritage is, I say American. I get strange looks. I am proud to be an American as boring as that may be to some.
