Description

While hiking the trails of Mauna Kea, I found this beautiful white flower. Everything around it was dried up but not this flower. There was a leaf in it and I tried to removed it with my fingers. Ouch! The leaf was full of little hair like needles that stuck in my finger. I removed the needles and also the leaf. The leaf, pods, as well as the whole plant was full of needles as if protecting it self from all the elements. The only safe part of this plant is the flower itself. I don't think anyone has this type of flower in their gardens because of the sharp needles. IT IS A SPECIAL FLOWER. I don't know its name and if anyone does, please let me know. Its a beautiful flower on this mountain and for now, I will name it............... Vjera Flower "Happy Birthday Vjera aka Sekadhar

Ah Sharky, I know this one!!!!! It's Pua Kala, (Hawaiian poppy) they appear in Hawaii's lava deserts. Hawaii's native prickly poppies, pua kala (literally "spiney flower) sparsely dot leeward slopes of all major islands except Kauai. An invaluable addition to ancient Hawaiian pharmacology, it's crushed stem sap and seeds were mixed to relieve toothaches. (Tell Cynlee) Since opium is renowned anaesthetic, this property is not too surprising!!! Better remember where you found this, LOL!!!! Excellent macro image!!!!!!***

very unique flower and it resembles the fake flowers that are made with tissue paper, but it is very much real!!incredible beauty. there is a cactus here that if you get too close to it and anything jars the pot the thorns will shoot out.I carefully lift them out of the way when painting. the thorns or so small it is almost impossible to see them by eye but you certainly feel them!!!

I have to agree with Punaguy and yesitis3, the petals seem almost artificial. That adds to the wonder of it, great story too!
