Description

I've lived in Kentucky my entire life, and, as such, have grown up listening to all of my grandmother's family playing/singing traditional Kentucky Bluegrass music, and I wanted to share a bit of my heritage with everyone! This is my great-uncle playing his banjo at last year's family reunion. I had to play with the exposure of this image a bit in Photoshop, and the background is still a bit light for my taste, but it's the best I could come out with.

It is a beautifull b/w portrait with the right grey tones onthe skin. For me the background problem is not the light grey, but the complete out of focus. I think it would be interesting to have an idea of it: it would give more strength to the pic, by giving it a complete story

i really love this, Krista, and i think the postwork you did on it adds some kind of mystery to it. to me...it almost feels like he's playing in a dream. although i'm originally from Calif., i've lived in the midwest since i was 4. i grew up in Ind., but my dad's from Ky. We would go there all the time to visit our family. I've lived in Louisville since 1990, and my folks moved to Ky. several years ago. something about Ky...well...hard to describe...but the people are REAL. Not to say people aren't real in other places. maybe you know what i mean. it's like we are who we are and it shows. you don't have to try to figure us out. well, i dunno, that's how i see it anyway. :) Nice to meet ya neighbor!!!! :)

Thanks for your great comments everyone! I'll definitely have to take some more like this at my next family get-together to better capture the atmosphere! We all have such a great time, and pretty much my entire family on this side either plays an instrument or sings (I sing). hugs to everyone

This one I like very much. Your clean up of the image is fantastic. Personally I like Great-Uncle Banjo Playing man as he is. Too much going on in the back would be distracting. I admire you PS abilities. I'm fairly new with digital photography and have been playing in PS for 2 weeks now (in my spare time). Dang, its hard for this old dog to learn. Keep up the great work! J

I think your final take on this image has worked out just fine. Your contrast looks good and distractions in the background have been minimized. When I look at this image, I think of a wonderful movie called, "Songcatcher".
