Cook's "Taka" is a traditional Black Sea fishing and cargo boat.
This little boat with the funny name and shape is able to haul 4 to 5 tons of cargo or fish. The unusual form of the boat was evolved over 200 years, as sailors struggled with the high, unpredictable waves and winds that can occur in the Black Sea. A taka has a folding mast, which can be fitted with a sail, but furled during high winds. These also have oars, as the boats are fairly light-weight. Usually, a taka is fit with a small engine, but they actually sail and row better than they motor.
Today, you still can see many boats that are derivatives of the taka all around the Black Sea.
