The Bavarian locomotive of type Gt 2 x 4 / 4 was transferred in 1920 from the German country lanes to the Deutsche Reichsbahn and they then received the new designation BR 96. The locomotive remains one of the strangest creations of the German rail network Strange not only because it is an unusually large and heavy tank locomotives, but also because it is a European giant locomotives of unusual design. This is a technical Mallet locomotive design that was common for the heavy freight trains in the U.S.
Mallet locomotives were designed by the engineers that came from Switzerland with the name Anatole Mallet.It was an articulated locomotive with two driving wheels groups.
A Mallet locomotive takes not only a huge thrust, it is also thanks to the many axles to distribute weight optimal, relatively low axle loads and less burden on the rails.
