Pansy comes from the French word pensée, meaning thought. A member of the Violaceae family, this is probably the most widely recognized spring flower. It's easy to grow and typically has oval or heart-shaped scalloped leaves.
Pansies are known as the flower with a ‘face’ with blooms consisting of five petals: four upward-sweeping fan-shaped petals and one indented, broad petal pointing down. The shape, size and placement of the flower petals is what defines the species.
