A ravelin is a defensive fortification feature that was commonly used in military architecture from the 16th to the 19th centuries. It is an angular, outwardly projecting fortification or detached outwork that was typically positioned in front of a fortress or a walled city. The primary purpose of a ravelin was to enhance the defensive capabilities of the main fortification by providing additional layers of protection and creating obstacles for the enemy. It served as an intermediary defensive position between the main fortification (such as a citadel or bastion) and the open ground or surrounding landscape. A ravelin typically took the form of a triangular or pentagonal structure with walls on three sides, while the fourth side facing the main fortification remained open. This open side was known as the "neck" or "gorge" and allowed defenders from the main fortification to fire upon the enemy attempting to assault or breach the ravelin.

A reduit is a term used in military architecture and strategy to refer to a fortified stronghold or a small, defensible position within a larger fortification or defensive system. The concept of the reduit originated in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly during the era of Vauban, a renowned French military engineer. It was used to provide a last line of defense for the defending forces, offering a secure and easily defensible position from which they could continue resisting the enemy's advance. A reduit is typically characterized by its strong fortifications, such as thick walls, bastions, and often surrounded by a moat or other obstacles. It is strategically positioned to maximize its defensive capabilities, often located at the center or a high point within the larger fortification. The reduit's purpose is to enable the defending forces to hold out against the enemy for an extended period, buying time for reinforcements or facilitating an orderly retreat if necessary. It serves as a stronghold where defenders can regroup, make a final stand, or coordinate counterattacks against the enemy forces.
