The streets were empty, the darkness swallowing up the town like a giant, unseen mouth. In a corner, a faint light emanated from an alleyway, and if one looked closely enough, a strangely discordant sound could be heard.
In the alley, under the light of a single street lamp, sat a skeleton. He was strumming away on a guitar, its fingers somehow twitching despite the absence off the muscle necessary to do so. The music was not quite in tune, it seemed, yet still it continued strumming and twanging.
As the skeleton played, three cats stared on, transfixed by the strange figure in the corner. It seemed almost as if it was trying to scare them away with its music. And, as if summoned by the eerie music, more cats began to creep their way towards the strings.
Soon, they were all swaying to the skeleton's tune, their fur meshing with the beat of the guitar. They seemed to love the music, the strange figure in the corner providing a welcome distraction for even the bravest of cats.
And so it went. The cats kept on coming, the skeleton in the corner not getting tired of playing, even though the street lamps were beginning to flicker, warning of the impending sunrise. By the time the sun was up, all of the cats that had come out of the woodwork had found a place near the skeleton, all swaying and bobbing to the music.
With the new day, the music stopped, and the cats all went back to their homes. Still, the skeleton stayed, playing its guitar for hours, until eventually the morning sun once again disappeared beneath the horizon.
That Halloween night, the skeleton returned, scaring three cats with its strange music. The cats soon found their courage, and like before, the alley filled with cats, swaying and bobbing to the music.
The skeleton played until morning, the cats intently listening until the sun once again peered over the horizon, and with it, the music stopped.
The streets were once again empty, the darkness once again swallowing up the town. But buried within the silence was the faint memory of the skeleton in the corner, scaring three cats with its strange music.
