With the right know-how, you can create materials the way they should look and achieve many interesting effects in the material room of Poser. This tutorial provides a wide varity of techniques for realistic materials and special effects.

The first chapter starts with everything you need to know about image maps. It demonstrates how masks can be used to add overlays to a material or to mix two complete materials, either by defining areas for each material independent from the material regions, or by gradually blending the materials. Next come displacement and translucence to create realistic materials. Visible light sources like bulbs, fire, and candles require some special tricks to look realistic in a render, which are also shown in the first chapter. For dynamic hair, the hair node is explained. Finally, several techniques are shown to create toon renders, either with the built-in toon features of Poser, or by creating various types of cell shaders with shader nodes.

The second chapter is a bit more technical. It shows how the mathematical nodes in Poser can be used for various image manipulation techniques well known from 2D graphics applications. This starts with different ways to change the color of a shader. Next are contrast, brightness, and intensity, including bias and gain that are special functions in Poser to control brightness and contrast. The chapter ends with gamma correction and the node for the hue/saturation/value color model.

The last chapter is about UV-mapping. It explains the very idea of UV-mapping and why it is important when creating materials. It also shows how to create texture maps, masks, or other image files based on a UV-template. (However, this is a Poser tutorial, not a tutorial about 2D graphics applications, so this part only demonstrates the very idea.) This includes seamless tiled patterns that can be used for many objects. Finally, the tutorial shows how to work with UV-coordinates directly in Poser to create various patterns as textures or for displacement.

Note: This tutorial is intended mainly for users that already have a basic understanding of Poser and in particular of the material room. In other words, it is based on Part 2 of The Poser Compendium. It can be used as a tutorial for learning, but also as a reference guide to get information about a particular issue.
