Birmingham hatter Hans Brimmer came to the idea construct his famous and popular mechanical hat around year 1889 after tragic death of his longtime friend, Harold Gutter. Gutter, well known private investigator, was shot to death after he was captured and disarmed by London crime lord Evil Richard. Heartbroken from friend´s death Brimmer searched for a way to prevent any similar tragic events. As the best hatter in England he focused on building some emergency measures into detective ever-present accessory: The hat. After some time, Brimmer made first serie of mechanical hats - constructed mostly for emergency cases and therefore named as Detective Defensive Hats. The first serie was really successful and Brimmer received a lot off suggestions for further improvement. Beyond of early emergency attachements (like revolver, riotgun or beacon) policemen and detective call for other - more universal and more practical gadgets which can help them in their work. So Brimmer released in 1891 second row of his hats - named Detective Universal Hat. Such hat, made in bowler, tophat, stetson and later fedora variations can hold three to five standard gadgets or one or two larger ones (like telescope with rangefinder or gatling gun). Most of them was operated by small ring remote control device. Some gadgets, considered as emergency was activated and operated automaticaly through hidden threat detector. Despite some complains that Brimmer´s hats was a lot heavier than normal ones, both series was very succcessful. And of course, those complains were made by those, whom Brimmer´s Hats never saved the life. Secret technology Brimmer used for squeezing all ingenious gizmos into cramped hat space was never fully understood.
