Human characters are the main focus of the Poser application. This tutorial explains how to set up materials for skin, eyes, and hair to create realistic renders of human characters.
Chapter 1 analyses the material features of human skin and develops a Poser material that mimics these features for a natural look. This includes special areas like the lips, the inner mouth, and the nails. In addition, some other generic approaches for skin materials are presented shortly.
Chapter 2 focuses on the eyes. It describes materials for the various parts of the human eye like pupil, iris, and eye white. It explains various types of reflections and highlights to give the eyes a vivid look. The chapter also presents material settings for lashes and brows made by transparency-mapped geometry layers.
Various kinds of skin details may be added to a skin material by overlays, which is covered by chapter 3. The tutorial describes how to add skin details like freckles, moles, beauty spots, wounds, and tan lines. It shows how to create skin decorations like tattoos, makeup, and bodypainting as well as wet or oiled skin. Finally, overlays may be used for body hair like brows, beards, or pubic hair and for tight fitting clothes without getting a painted-on look.
The last chapter is about materials for layered hair as it is used by most hair objects for Poser. It explains how to set up hair materials to get a realistic look with correct highlights. In addition, it shows how to turn straight hair into wavy hair by displacement.
Note: This tutorial is intended mainly for users that already have a basic understanding of Poser and in particular of the material room. In other words, it is based on Part 2 of The Poser Compendium. It can be used as a tutorial for learning, but also as a reference guide to get information about a particular issue.
Note: Techniques described in this tutorial are used in the Perfect Skin and Perfect Tan Line products.
