Interview with Artist of the Month - ladylake

Dec 15, 2022 at 06:00 am by gToon

We are delighted to present to you a short interview with our December 2022 Artist of the Month, ladylake. She is a long-time member of Renderosity having joined in 2001. Her ability to use AI tools to generate images is surpassed only by her amazing digital landscapes. Like many great creators, her work often suggests more than the obvious beauty of her scenes. We love the moodiness of her characters and the amazing use of color in all of her work.

We spoke with ladylake and asked her about her background and working methods. We've also chosen 10 works from her gallery to feature in this video (see above). Thank you, ladylake, for taking the time to talk with us. Please visit her gallery and share her work with your friends.

AI Generated art is a current specialty of yours; how did you get involved with this style of art and what tools do you use to create it?

ladylake:  My major focus lately are landscapes created with Terragen. I was struggling with the program. It just kept getting more complicated, therefore more difficult for me to get the results I wanted. The fun had gone out of it. One day while browsing at Rosity I noticed this thing called AI Generated art that a few were doing. It intrigued me, so I reached out to a friend who got me started with Wombo. It is a free program so there was not much to lose to try it. After about 20 minutes, I was hooked!! I still use Wombo entirely as most of the other applications are by subscription. Since this is just for fun I didn't want to get tied to a monthly payment. I can see that one or two others are more detailed but I am loving Wombo. A dear friend once told me, it doesn't matter what program you have, make the very best images you can with that.

I use Paint Shop Pro for post work. It is the first "art" program I ever purchased. That was many years ago and I have upgraded it several times since. I used Bryce for a while, Poser for a short while, tried out several fractal programs, and then moved on to Terragen. Now here I am, an "older" lady creating in the future of art.

I'm also so impressed with your landscapes. Terragen seems to be your tool of choice. Why do landscapes interest you so much?

ladylake:  Why do I like landscapes so much? I love beautiful things and you just can't beat Mother Nature. I am not sure if living in South Texas influences the way I see nature. I have been lucky enough to travel to 48 states and see many beautiful and unique things. While many think of South Texas as being dry and barren, it is really a tropical desert. Lots of palm trees, flowering bushes, etc. Even the prickly cacti are gorgeous when they bloom. I especially like water in images: lakes, ponds, oceans, and rivers.

Did you study to be a digital artist or are you self-taught?

ladylake:  I have no training in art. Everything I know to do comes from asking questions, reading, and experimenting. That, and I like to think I have a good eye for what looks good. At least what I think looks good. :-)

How do you choose the subject of your work? What inspires you?

ladylake: I suppose it sounds silly to say that almost everything can inspire the subject of my work, but that is true. It can change quickly but I almost always come back to nature and people. People's faces are an endless source of inspiration for me.

Any advice for those who want to try AI Generated art?

ladylake: Do it! Jump in and try it. It is so much fun and it will become addictive. Not kidding. Try Wombo....what have you got to lose? Then there are other applications out there, many others. Choose your addiction. Oh, and brush up on your vocabulary, the prompts can get very wordy to get good results. lol

AI art is the future folks. It isn't a bad thing, just a different way of doing things. Things change and we have to change with it.

Everyone should know that AI is going to be used more and more, but the disappointing thing of all is that there is nothing creative about it, especially when it uses image algorithms over the internet of other people's work without any permission from the creator.
My sincerly congrats for the AOM - It's very well deserved, your artworks are most excellent ones!
Congrats on this well deserved accomplishment! :-)
A delightful interview, and it's great that you jumped in and learned to be an artist, and tried whatever you needed to, and made magic with it all. Your magic, freshness and energy show in everything you do. Wonderful interview, and congratulations on the A.O.M! I hope it inspires a lot of other artists along the way.
Congratulations!
