The ruins of several medieval monasteries stand close to the banks of the River Witham in my part of Lincolnshire, in England. There are tales of unruly monks being chastised by the abbot at Tupholme Abbey and of inappropriate relationships with local women in Bardney. The un-drained fenlands provided a bleak, watery background for isolated communities in the Middle Ages. Drunkenness and fornication would have been sins against God. Committing a murder would have been unforgiveable. My story is based upon such wickedness and its long term consequences. It is a tale of retribution. I hope that readers will find it in the spirit of the competition.
