Whisper her name When she came we were prepared to greet her by the door. The world, so old yet not the same -we knew of it no more. The garden where we used to play now filled with twisted ghosts, the path just gone the lake so hard scaring us - almost. We went outside as children do to face a strange new place and there she was behind the well I think I saw her face! We ran around we felt the snow - our noses running too and built a snowcave for at troll who had noone to woo. She watched us play so close to us we felt her cold fresh breath our cheeks went red our fingers froze and we felt close to....death? And when she reached to touch our hearts we screamed and ran away. Her glittering eyes were pale and hard as diamonds on a tray. We had forgotten it was there the hard and frozen lake we had forgotten it was deep and could put lives on stake. Treacherous ice so hard, but thin a crank-a scream-a hand reached out for me I grabbed it fast and pulled her back on land. My sister sweet so pale she lay with icecubes in her hair and found no warmth in blankets soft as if they were not there. And then a fever came and went and in the longest night I held her hand and dried her face and whispered "It's all right" A troll came by a fairy too and then a witch so strong she can decide if children lives she stayed for very long. She said "Oh child with eyes so pale you never must forget my queen now has full half your soul -the other half, not yet but for to keep what you have got on every winters morn' you give her thanks for letting go your soul before it dawns" And now, when winter knocks our door we run and play our games but in the dark in early morns we whisper out her name: "Oh Queen of Winter great thy might your icycle heart is cold and we will always still obey (longing for the month of May) for you own half a soul!"
