Entry #26

The image is about the Highland Clearances of Scotland and about the journey many had to take across the ocean to the New World. The following is a song written for these ravaged peoples and for the hardship they had to endure. I hope you enjoy. Catlin Hush, Hush Once our valleys were ringing with sounds of our children singing - but now sheep bleat o'er the evenin' and shielings stand empty and open. We stood, our heads bowed in prayer while battles laid our cottages bare - the flames, fire, the clear mountain air and many were dead by the morning. Where was our good Highland mettle? Our men once so fearless in battle? They stand cowered, and huddled like cattle and wait to be shipped o'er the ocean. No good pleading or praying now gone, gone, all hope of staying - hush, hush, the anchors are weighing don't cry in your sleep, bonnie dearie. Oh hush, hush, time to be sleepin' hush hush, dreams come a creepin' dreams of peace and of freedom don't cry in your sleep, bonnie dearie. Jim MacLean
