Subject: Newbie, needing opinions and help

Hi,

:-)

I'm making a V2 texture and so far this is what I've done...

Tiani1.jpg

  1. I've been having a lot of trouble with lashes, I don't have a sketch pad, so its by mouse. I tried thicker lashes and they look blocky, thinner lashes work better, but trying to get them spaced further apart looks off. (I turned the texture for them off in Poser while doing this render)

  2. The lips just keep being a hair off of alignment, no matter how I adjust them.

  3. Because I am using photos for the texture and have to blend, I'm losing the pore details in places. I'm not sure how to get that back.

The texture size that I'm doing is 3000 x 3000. I'm using PSP 7.04. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, DR

Don't be disheartened, it's looking good. You can restore the pore texture by using a little added noise (keep it on a new layer!) I particularly like your eyes, they have real depth and sparkle!

What tool are you using to paint the lashes and what tool are you using to blend the skin?

I saw over at another poser place were they had all the body parts on seperate layers . This trick might work for you. Say on the lips , I had this problum as well and i spent hour after hour adjusting away. On its own layer you can mask the outline and when you are done load it up and invert the mask and hit delete . Uv mapper will make seperate layers for you . Pick the one you want then hide the rest. Save and keep as a seperate layer. Or you can do it the fast way and find one of the lips only textures already made and use that one for your template. ( dont forget to save the mask) For lashs you might try experimenting by haveing a new layer over a pre-existing one and trying to replicate it. till you get the hang of it. I serriously have to get a tablet as well mice wernt made to draw with at least for me.

Elgyfu,

Thanks, I'll try that :) I searched the web for eyes that were close to her's and found some oddball ones and combined two of them with her's to make them.

Migal, I made the eye lashes by making a circle with preset shapes tool, erasing part of it and then overlaying it again and erasing the top part and then merging the visible layers and copying it to layers of a template of the eye shape.

That's the start of my fourth attempt, trying to get the lashes a little thicker each time. The last time they just seemed like thin lines. They don't look too bad in one view, but the other, they look very bad. One thing I did do the first and second time was make it like a false eyelash, with an eye line, which just added to the terrible look. At least its not as bad as my first one lol won't show that one it bit royally :P

I'm using the cloning tool for the blend, at first using it at 100% opacity and 95% hardness and then doing it at a bit lower to get the blend better.

Here are the lashes and what happened to the last texure I tried, not using the photos for anything but guidelines. As you can see, while she's lovely, she looks like she's wearing body makeup all over :( I want to avoid that this time.

I'm still trying to get Anton's earings to fit on the front of her ears and not behind them lol

This is the start, with the photo, it has 13 layers, so far.

Tasquah,

I use a lot of layers! lol and a tablet will have to wait, unless Santa is very nice to me :P I should have done with the lips what I am doing with the eyelashes. This would have been posted, but I clicked preview and not post and went back to PSP :P Again, any tips, advice or comments are welcome. Thanks!

oh i see your problum your useing PSP haha just kiddin its a pretty good program. I did want to say thanks for posting this i am learning stuff from as well. I have maybe 40 unfinished textures and keep hitting snaggs and putting them on the back burner till i can figure out how to fix them or find a tutorial that deals with it.

DarkestRose,

Sorry it took me so long to respond.

On the lashes: They need more of a taper. The secret is smudge, in either Photoshop or PSP. Paint a line for the base of the eyelash along the eyelid ridge with the brush set to maybe 3 to 5 pixels. Then, make a new layer. Go to your PSP retouch tool and use the smudge function. Set it so that it utilizes both layers. You basically just sort of grab that line you painted, and drag it up towards where the end of the eyelash meets. You can do a straight line, curved line, whatever you want. But, the smudge tool will make a nice taper. It's fairly easy to adjust the length of the lash you are dragging by changing the brush properties, like opacity and such. You'll get the hang of it fairly quickly, I'll bet. After the lash is done, delete the layer below it that had the original line you painted, or it will look like she's wearing mascara.

On the skin texture blending: The problem with cloning is that it can leave marks when opacity is at 100 and it blurs when opacity isn't at 100. That blur effect definitely blends, but you end up with a face that's all one color and it looks like a ton of make-up (as you've noticed). You might try working more with the eraser, instead. If you have pictures of the face from multiple angles, you're golden. Just place the various portions on different layers so they overlap, then erase a little where they overlap. If you don't have pictures from multiple angles, you'll have to manufacture a piece of skin using much the same method. Grab a skin patch without too much pore definition (not around the nose). Copy that patch to a new layer. Duplicate that new layer and move the copy of the skin patch slightly away from the original skin patch, but still make them overlap. Blend those two layers with eraser, then merge those two layers into one. Next, duplicate that new bigger skin patch and repeat the process until you have a decent-sized patch you can blend wherever you need it. You may still have to use the clone tool in some places, but you'll have to use it a lot less.

Noise filters can help, but texture freaks will see it, especially in preview mode. Good luck, you're doing great so far.

Woops. I forgot about the lips. I really don't have a solution for that. Yeah, you can do the lips on a different UV template, but you're still going to have to deal with the edges and I really don't know any simple way around this. It's just a lot of work, trying to get those edges to look good where the lips meet the face. You will be cloning here, I'm afraid.

Migal,

You should put the eyelash tutorial you wrote here up for others to find, instead of it being buried here. I can't believe the difference and it didn't take me long either. It's not bad for a first try :) Just remember to put a tranparency where the base file is or you pull in the white from that :P which I did until I realized what exactly was happening. I need a little practice with it, but it is so much easier than what I was doing before. Thank you so very very much.

I have tons of photos of her ~chuckle~ that's Shauna Sand.

ss.jpg

I'm changing a few things, not many, but my ex adores her and I decided to do something nice for him for once :P

I'll try the texturing on her later. I spent just about the whole night trying to do the lashes. The lips I'll keep adjusting. I can use the deformation tool to stretch or make them narrower or whatever.

Again, thank you so very much, Migal. I really appreciate the help and advice.

Tasquah,

I hope Migal's replies here help you as much as they did me. Thank you for posting and I tried Adobe, it was too awkward for me :P I'm not that coordinated. An auburn here, that's nearly as bad as a blond.

Thanks once again. I'll probably have more questions later on, but for now this really makes so much of a difference. I was about ready to give up, the lashes were driving me nuts.

When she's ready, hopefully, I'll be permitted to release the texture from the original creator of V2.

ps: I'll never find the hair though :P and me and modeling end up with weird things.

Migal ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 6:14 AM

You're welcome. :-)

I thought that was Shauna. She's a bit of heaven on two legs, for sure (at least from my perspective).

BTW, the smudge tool is also the secret to end wisps in postwork hair. Glad I could help. You'll find many here with a lot more knowledge than me. :-)
