You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

no clue, but whatisname works..

serene ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 3:58 PM

We call them "party hooters" in the UK.....

Crescent ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 3:59 PM

I call them party favors or noise makers.

lgrant ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 4:05 PM

I've always known them as "noise makers" (I'm in the US) I did a bit of web searching, looking at the party supply web sites, and some of them refer to them as "blowouts", but this may be a trade designation...I've never heard ordinary people call them anything but "noise makers" (and if they need to differentiate between them and party horns, which also make noise, they add, "You know, the kind the unroll when you blow into them.") lynn

LOL, very cool gif...thought Vicky was giving us one heck of a raspberry there for a sec :) We call 'em 'noise makers' here in the midwest too...

Kelderek ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 4:50 PM

In Sweden we call it a "flp"... Always thought that sounded funny even in my own langauge, LOL ;-)

Nance ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 5:12 PM

Well, it kinda does look like "flp" sounds.

Norbert ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 5:48 PM

It's technical name is "Expungigating Airsock". It was originally invented as a device for scaring mice out of hard to reach places, or irritating them to death. Too bad it can't be used online...

lalverson ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 5:48 PM

Agreed then Flarp it is!!

ockham ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 5:54 PM

Languages are so delightfully inefficient. The stock of one-syllable words is extremely finite; to think that such valuable real estate is wasted on a frivolous gadget like this must drive a logical linguist crazy. This is why invented languages like Esperanto never work; you just can't figure out in advance which concepts deserve to have the simplest or easiest-to-pronounce words.

anyone remember that episode of Are You Being Served? What one of those were repeatedly referred to as Blow Ticklers, somehow that is just too hinky, not altogether unfunny mind.

Valandar ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 7:02 PM

I just like how her hair is bouncing as she blows on it. ^_^

"Expungigating Airsock" --for real? Somehow as I read Norbert's post I could not help but hear it in the voice of "Cheers'" Cliff Klaven. ;-) flpflp

Hawkfyr ( ) posted Tue, 17 December 2002 at 10:37 PM

"Somehow as I read Norbert's post I could not help but hear it in the voice of "Cheers'" Cliff Klaven. ;-)" I swear I was thinking the same thing...lmao Pretty cool flarp you got there TrekkieGrrrl. I must say,in all of the years I've been around here,I have never seen anyone make one of those before. Quite unique. Tom

Good God! For a moment there, I thought it was her tongue! LOL! Great prop, trekkie!

Routledge ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 1:40 AM

After listening to one for 10 minutes it`s name changes to "Get that thing away from me you freak"

Kelderek ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 1:51 AM

LOL @ ockham :-) I definately think this cool gadget deserves a one syllable word! BTW, the " in flp is pronounced as "ae", just so that you get it right when you add this word to your everyday stock vocabulary ;-)

elgyfu ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 2:44 AM

We must be odd then, we have always called them 'Blow-outs'. The mouse removal comment is spot-on, I have used one to remove a guinea pig from beneath a Christmas tree on more than one occassion. Actually I have also used a didgereedo for that as well but that's another story. Cute prop Ernyoka! It made me smile!

Schlabber ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 6:59 AM

ahem - as funny this animation is - (and the prop too btw) - it is wrong ... It is exactly the other way around - you're out of air when this thing is rolled out and your cheeks is blown up when this thing is rolled in ;o) But however - the idea is great

ockham ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 11:11 AM

"It is exactly the other way around - you're out of air when this thing is rolled out and your cheeks is blown up when this thing is rolled in ;o)" No, Ernyoka has it right. If you're blowing from the diaphragm, which most people do, your cheeks will fill up at the same time that the flp is extended. That's the point of maximum interior pressure. When you release the diaphragm, the flp will fall back, and your cheeks will also fall back to neutral. (And if you're built like Airhead Vicky, the bubble on top of your skull will also collapse!) I suppose a trumpeter might have the skill to make it happen the other way round.

FishNose ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 11:41 AM

Nice, TG! The cheeks are definitely puffed out when the flp is extended - after all, it's the air pressure in the mouth that keeps it extended. Removed pressure lets it roll up again. Same principle as blowing a trumpet - the air pressure creates the noise. Is it Dizzy Gillespie gets those HUGE cheeks when he blows? Norbert - Originally for scaring mice? Wow, that's some cool trivia! :] Fish

Asciicodeplus ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 5:46 PM

In spanish(Mexico) its called "espanta suegras"... Ascii (-)

Schlabber ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 5:59 PM

ah ... well - yeah - now remember my childhood-days ... right Ockham - I forgot that I don't need all the air in my cheeks to make this thing rolled out ... It might should stay rolled out until the air is blown out ;o)

Norbert ( ) posted Wed, 18 December 2002 at 10:22 PM

That "Ex-expungy-".. whatever I called it comment up there, was just a big line of hooey. I thought people would catch the "irritating mice to death" part, and tie it into all the 'house mouse' hooey that's been going on around here. Ya know? "Too bad it can't be used online"? Guess the dry humor wasn't fine enough get up anyones nose, and tickle their brain.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 19 December 2002 at 5:27 AM

Uhm Norbert. I understood it the way you meant it. Do I get a prize then? ;o) Ah well I better get this thingie finished. Expect to see it later today in Free Stuff :o) Thanks for all your comments. I never thought I'd volountarily use a swedish word for anything ;o) But I guess I will release it as a flp G I kinda like that word... Matches the sound it produces anyway. annoying... swedish...hmmmmmmm ;o)
