Subject: Import, Export problem

It worked fine until I put in an extension. After, when i would export a dialogue says you must group before exporting which never happened before. I imported the file, object name was under the scene but no object. If I create a new scene and import an object which was made prior to the ext. being placed in Carrara the object name shows under scene but it duplicates the last object that was made. I deleted the ext. from Carrara, no go. I then unistalled Carrara and deleted the Carrara folder and then reinstalled the program, no go, still same problem. Also I notice something which was never there after insatlling the ext., that the Group is always highlighted. I also did a virus scan which came up empty. I think that part of the ext. is still somewhere on the hard drive which is screwing up Carrara. Any suggestions as how to slove this problem? Thanks, Dave

What exactly do you mean by extension? Do you mean a plug-in for Carrara, or an OS type thing? None of my extensions touch anything outside of the Carrara folder, and I am very certain none of the other available Carrara extensions do either. Brian P. I mean plugin for Carrara Pc. No other program is affected and everything else works great except Carrara. It is like a nuisance virus or a dll file that didnt get totally deleted from Carrara. If a dll file didnt get removed, reinstalling it will not do a thing with that file still being on the hard drive. I believe it has to be with the ext. I insatlled cause it worked ok until that point. Dave

What extension was it? Like I said, as far as I know, none of the available extensions use any .dll's that would be put anywhere but in the carrara directory ( a plug-in is really a dll ). At any rate, if you want to know, reinstall the plug-in, and see what files are extracted. I can't imagine any of the extensions having viruses, because viruses can't really attach themselves to an extension like an executable.

It was the DCG Shader Pack 1. This is the onlt thing that I can know of to cause this to happen. It is something that is attaching itself back to and only to Carrara and like I said Carrara was ok until i installed this plugin. The only thing I think I can do is to get a clean sweep program and install and then throw the plugin back in and hope it will find the file or whatever it is. Thanks, Dave

I have DCG Shader Pack with no problem, might be a system problem.

I've offered to help out Dave, even gone as far as setting up a pristine machine with no extensions. I wasn't able to recreate the problem with the pristine machine or my own complete mess machine, but I don't have exact recreation steps. I've asked him to send me the obj file and try it again with a fresh scene, hopefully we can find the steps to recreate the problem. Shader Pack 1 is installed to the CarraraExt directory and once you delete the Carrara folder it's gone, so even if it was the culprit, it's long gone from Dave's machine and wouldn't be causing the problems Dave is still seeing. It doesn't use anything outside the Ext directory and if it's not in the Ext directory Carrara doesn't load or activate it. Right now I suspect the obj file he is trying to import is corrupted or has something in it Carrara doesn't understand. I've had problems with obj export and import in the past too. I didn't see Dave's exact symptoms, I didn't get the duplicate the selected item problem, but I did see objects that Carrara wouldn't draw and if you tried to render them it would barf. In those cases I had to go back to a previous save. In many of those cases, if I opened fresh and went through my steps again it would work fine so it was probably some problem that happened over time and/or use.
