THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Discovered the "Twirl" filter in Photoshop...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 1:43 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 9:09 PM

Yeah, it just twirls stuff, so I never used it. But, it's amazing what butons you'll play with when you get bored/tired/putting off what you should really be doing. These are all 1024x1024 terrains made from quickie designs I made in Photoshop, then twirled. Just fun. AgentSmith

I've never thought about it. The second one would look great as part of an engine, like blades in a reactor or something. Josselin

Wadus ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 1:56 PM

I like the second one best. Also like the ground mat...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 2:18 PM

Ground mat - if it has a bump like the one above has, crank the reflection to 100, turn down the diffusion and ambience low to counteract, and turn off selective anti-aliasing. Makes it look slightly wet. AS

cool, I started messing around with the idea, but I was using a square pic. Half black and half white, came up with stuff similar to your last render...

Wadus ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 4:02 PM

well, I just noticed your picture is square also...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 4:15 PM

Well, all pictures are square or rectangular on the outside. Is that what you mean? AS

I thought your first picture was a rectangle at first glance because of the fading to black on the top and bottom...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 21 December 2002 at 5:11 PM

Ah, I see. No, I always work 256x256, 512x512, etc. I can always clip extraneous stuff.

Agent Smith, Great idea!!! You should get "bored/tired" more often, if this is the result. Very creative. Seasons best to you and yours, - TJ

Very cool, A.S., boredom is the mother of invention, or something like that...thanks, :>

AS, all this no sleeping is paying off then. I've often played about with the twirly thing in Photoshop but never thought to use it as a terrain. Thanks for your input I'll go twirl something and see what happens. Catlin

Clip it some more and use the gaussian edges filter in the terrain editor and you have an awesome throwing star!!!!

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Sun, 22 December 2002 at 2:08 PM

Or saw blade!

pauljs75 ( ) posted Sun, 22 December 2002 at 3:25 PM

This is cool. Could probably do the exact same thing with the twist deformation in PSP. It could come in handy if someone ever wanted to model the impeller part of a centrifugal pump. Or blading on a radial flow turbine. Same is true for centrifugal compressors/blowers/fans, but they're just really another type of cent-pump. Heh... Also I see that A.S. has something in the works for the crest of a wave. Which will be cool. Now people will be wanting to use that boolean surfboard model that came with Bryce. Heheh... Gotta admit, terrains always were the most flexible feature in Bryce. It's all in how you go about using them. :)

In the Planet X challenge a couple of months ago, I wanted an extractor fan to put on my building but didn't have a clue how to make one. If only I'd thought about the twirly thing it would not have been a problem. I'm in the process of making one now and if it turns out OK I'll put it in the freebies. Catlin

Phantast ( ) posted Mon, 23 December 2002 at 4:54 AM

Synchronicity. I was just thinking about doing the very same thing.
