I'm exporting some objects from Max to use as props, when importing they seem to have strange lighting effects near the pieces composed of boolean objects in max. Is there anything special I need to do when exporting?

Yep. If they're in obj format, you need to run them through uv mapper and use the 'split vertices' option. All your problems will magically disappear. mac
