All my free lightsabres are now obsolete. Why? Simple. Ancient free weapons and hokey religions are no match for a good free blaster. B^) I've put this model off too long, so I finally did it. And it's pretty. I'm proud. Han Solo's Blaster Pistol now in Free Stuff (or just go to [Dodger's Poser Stuff](http://www.dodger.org/friv), where the link will take you anyway). It's fully mapped, includes corrected manually-built bumpmaps for P4, and it also intended to be proof-of-concept my proposal or how to solve the big BUM problem (so be sure to read the README). Oh, yeah, and the scope is removable and there's a Pull Trigger morph dial!

This is all P4 on a PC, no postwork, no pro-pack, no P5, no raytracing, just raw honest-to-goodness P4. Needless to say, I'm happy with it!

This actually looks better than the Kenner replica I purchased in the early '80s, before they started tinting the toys in garish neon colours to distinguish them from real guns.

And.....just in time to put it under the tree for little Billy. No, NOOOO, Billy...not the neighbors french poodle! Diane Cool looking weapon!

*L* You're not supposed to blast dogs. You're supposed to make them your co-pilots! LD, thanks! I actually examined both pics of the actual props and of the Kenner and Hasbro toys, and I considered going with the Kanner design because I thought it would be the more familiar, but purism got the best out of me. As far as neon colours go -- the art supply section is usually close to the toys, as is the hardware section. The latter provides black spraypaint, but I've found that painting a toy gun with rapidograph ink looks almost just like real black gunmetal. Here's a pic of the whole set of blasters I've done so far.

I should make a few nots on the above. The materials have been edited on most to match one another (i.e. the same settings for chrome, reflection maps the same, etc) The blaster seen above are, from left to right (source in parentheses):
  • Black Ray Rifle (Gamma World RPG)
  • Mark V Blaster Rifle (Gamma World RPG)
  • Chewbacca's Bowcaster (Star Wars, et. al.)
  • Plasma Rifle (Aliens)
  • Antimatter Laser (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
  • Alien gun (Babylon 5)
  • PPG (Bablyon 5)
  • Double-Barrelled Laser (The Black Hole)
  • Boba Fett's Pistol (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • Laser Raygun (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, original serials)
  • BlasTech DH-17 Rebel Blaster (Star Wars)
  • Han Solo's Blaster Pistol (Star Wars)
  • BlasTech E-11 Imperial Blaster (Star Wars, et. al.)
  • Klingon Disruptor (Star Trek (TOS))
  • Colonial Blaster Pistol (Battlestar Galactica)

These are all in my Free Stuff!

Dodger, I've downloaded many of your props in the past and want to say Thanks, and hope you have a good holiday season. ;-)

Looks great and thanks so much :)

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 25 December 2002 at 12:01 AM

Oh, yeah, Little_Dragon: The Barrel is specifically a different material so that you can either make it chrome and remove the scope, thus making the Luke and Han blasters from ESB, and so that you can make it flourescent orange if you so choose B^)

A nice modeling job of a pistol. Very well done. It shows how something can seem advanced and super modern when it has been forgotten.

This a "broom handle" Mauser (circa 1895) German 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a modern telescope mounted on it. Far from being a future blaster, its a relic of the Boer War and WWI.
You can make it more exotic looking by adding the rifle stock and the 32 shot drum magazine which can be attached to convert it into a short rifle.

_dodger ( ) posted Wed, 25 December 2002 at 2:51 AM

Mycrofted: Read the blurb on the site. Actually the Mauser was used up into the Second Great War, when it was replaced with the Luger. The English commandeered a lot of them and used them in preference to their own pistols. This was the design after which the Buck Rogers raygun was modeled, and since George Lucas is a big fan of both old sci-fi serials and of WWII movies, this was used as the Han Solo blaster. The emitter barrel at the end is from some sort of British faucet. The scope isn't modern, however. It's a WWI rifle scope, as were almost all the scopes in Star Wars. As a result, this is Han Solo's blaster from Star Wars. Stripped of its additions, it would be a broom handle Mauser, however.

Here's proof, though this publicity shot left out the scope. I couldn't find a good pic with the scope except pics of the prop by itself.
