Subject: How to separate a body part from the body?

Hi all, Sorry if this has been discussed...I did some searches first and didn't find anything. I need to have just the hand part from the Mike character in a mad lab scene. Is there any way to get the hand separated from the body? Right now I'm loading the whole Mike character and then unchecking the "Visible" property for all the other body parts except the hand. This works but obviously wastes a lot of resources. Thanks in advance for the help!

You can export the hand as an obj file and re-import it, but you'll lose the posability. mac

In Poser4, under "Figures - Additional Figures" you will find separate left and right hands.

Make a copy of Mike's geometry Delete all the groups except for the hand and fingers you want to keep. then Make a copy of Mike's CR2. Delete all the body parts except for the hip, chest, collar, shldr, forearm, hand, and fingers for the hand that you want. Don't delete the BODY actor, either. This will create a figure that will load up and work just like your invisible-ised version, but will not load geometry for anythying but what you need.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm going to try _dodger's procedure (thanks for the detailed info). I really need to keep the overall body texture I'm using because it has the hand texture part that I need, so that's why I don't think I can use the separate hand figure in "Additional Figures." I realized my original thought about detaching the hand wouldn't work either for that reason as I would then lose the texture that was associated with the body/hand? Thanks again.

Well, technically you won't lose anything by detaching the hand as long as the UV mapping is kept intact, but that's basically what my procedure will do. Essentially, you will be making a version of Mike without anything except the hand for geometry, but you have to keep everything down the line to the hip, which is the actor attached to the BODY (which also must be kept) so that it will position correctly. It may be a little bit hard to pose because the other body parts aren't really there, but you can select them from the menu and use dials on them even though they have no geometry. Also, you can pose Mike in the positions and then store the pose (still or animated), and then use the pose on the new figure. The pose dots will work, too. And of course, if you use the translate tool on the hand things will work. Oh, I almos forgot -- remove any IK chains for parts that you remove. Thus remove both leg IK chains and the other arm's IK chain.
