Subject: Free Plants for Poser or Your Other 3D Applications

I just found out that the popular Plant Studio, which can export a wide variety of plants in obj. format is now free! http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/index.htm Thought you guys would be interested.

Yep, it sure is. For anyone who gets it, it's a great little app, but it has one peculiarity that I've never managed to correct. The colors of the plants can only be changed by adjusting the Ambient color, NOT the Object color. Not a big deal, just weird. mac

I run my Plantstudio plants through Uvmapper, so I can texture them more easily. Saving out the new obj also fixes the color problems.

It didn't for me, lyrra. Are you doing something I don't know about? I'm using uv mapper pro, and I STILL have to change the ambient color. mac

They went free a while back. They give you a registration number to use, but it's never worked for me. I e-mailed them and they sent me a reply re: what to do, which I followed to the letter, but it's still acting like a demo. I can make a couple of plants, and it'll give me a message that I've used up my allowed times per session. But it is a great little program. I've made some excellent looking plants, which I've taken into Bryce and retextured. I haven't tried using UV Mapper. Lyrra, when you say you run Plant Studio through UV Mapper, how do you do that? I didn't know you could run other programs through UV Mapper. Interesting. Melanie

I've found that if I turn off save double polygons and export as 3ds format they work much better in Poser. Your results may vary.

kawecki ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2002 at 2:11 AM

There is a problem with exporting, exporting as obj or 3ds doesn't look good, the plants are fine if exported as dxf, but Poser doesn't convert correctly dxf meshes. So I created an utility that converts correctly dxf to obj and also create texture uv coordinates. My Alien Plant (Free stuff) was created with Plant Studio.

Stupidity also evolves!

Pardon my typing -I didn't mean run as in 'run a program' I meant to say that I take the obj exported by Plantstudio and remap them in Uvmapper. Sorry for the confusion! maclean You know, I shouldn't post when I'm tired :) I forgot - I've never brought them into Poser. I use Bryce to render in, and have never had a problem there.

I had posted this demo image of working with Plant Studio plants in Poser to the usenet Poser group some time ago when sharing my plant libraries there. Maybe it will be helpful.

I have 33 plant libraries free for personal use just for asking but can't handle the bandwidth to put them in free stuff. A single 1.89MB zip file holds the pla files and a jpg preview image for each library. These are shrub like plants, tons of flowers and some vines. If you want these files, send me an email with the email address you'd like me to send them to. Thumbnail images of each library image attached so you don't get a pig in a poke.

Diana, Thanks for the info. Very helpful indeed. I just tried exporting as 3ds and converting to obj in poser and that solves the problem. At last....LOL Lyrra, Coffee.... it's the wonder cure-all for typos. Heh, heh. mac

From an old thread I remember that colors don't look good in Vue either, but people have worked around this by retexturing in Vue itself.

Diana, IM me and I can host them at my site. 2 megs is nothing - I'm uploading 50 right now :) Lyrra
