What is the best way to make your own texture?

Most use a Mapping software and a photoshop/paint program, create the map and off you go...Sharen

hmmm, I actually load the template on one monitor and the paint shop pro on another (dual monitor is only way to go!) with a jpg already provided and begin changing colors and adding layers for modification. the template actually gives me an idea of the curves/lines of the object. Tried using 3d paint programs but am a clutz who cant afford wacom tablet!
