Contest Theme: Shadow Puppets Rules: Create an image with shadows only. Preferably with just hands as this contest is to set off the release of my Fancy Fingers nail package, but I won't limit you to the use of hands only. The only other restriction is you must use shadows to get your message across. Limit 2 entries per person. If by some chance 2 of your images make the top 5, the next will be chosen for a prize to spread the wealth. Closes Sat, January 10th at Midnight R'osity time (So Friday night at midnight) Winners will be announced no later than Monday, January 13th, sometime after I wake my lazy rear end up. LOL 1st Place Fancy Fingers Complete for V3 by myself Poeme by larissad 2nd Place Choice of Fancy Fingers Vol. 1 or Vol 2. Modern and Sexy faces by smitthms 3rd Place Choice of Fancy Fingers Vol. 1 or Vol 2. More prizes may be added as the contest goes along. :) (If you would like to add a prize to this package, please site IM me to let me know) Have fun with this guys.

grin stupid question here..... ummm, do the shadows have to be completely done in poser or is postwork allowed? Spiritfoxy-^..^-~~

Tashar59 ( ) posted Fri, 03 January 2003 at 8:27 PM

I don't think postwork should be aloud in this one. What's to stop someone doing everything in what ever app. they have then aplying it to a square and say it was done in poser. Just my thoughts. Then again, the rules don't say it has to be done in poser. Tashar 59

creativechaos ( ) posted Fri, 03 January 2003 at 10:17 PM

Nope, sorry, should have mentioned that, Postwork IS allowed, just not to create the actual shadow.

creativechaos ( ) posted Fri, 03 January 2003 at 10:53 PM

You're welcome Spiritfoxy. I'm eagerly awaiting the cool things people come up with for this. :) And there are a few more prizes in the works, I'm hoping. Gotta talk to a few people yet, but I wanted to get this posted so ppl could start going at it. Deadline may be extended if people run into probles or there are a lack of entries

Hi, Where can we post the contest entries ?

creativechaos ( ) posted Sat, 04 January 2003 at 2:14 PM

Right here in this thread Firebirdz. :) That way the judges don't have to go chasing links to find everyone's entries. :)

I've created an image that has hands and it casts a shadow of the hands which is the main feature. Do I post just the shadow or include the hands to show that it was what cast the shadows ? Thanks.

creativechaos ( ) posted Sat, 04 January 2003 at 7:11 PM

Whichever you think gets the point across best Firebirdz. :)

Ok, This is my Entry. I call it ... The Bunny Rabbit :-)

Vicki 3 with pose created by me. The positioning of the hands and the lights was a nightmare! Did it cos I wanted to see if this was possible. Only postwork is adding my name.

It was definitely a challenge. I've done this before in real life but usually the simpler models like the elephant and the dog and the goose.

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 1:02 AM

Hmmm, I sure hope we get more entries in this...otherwise...well it's gonna be no contest (pardon the bad pun)

hehe well you guys did have such a hard time deciding so this just makes it that much easyer.I was waiting twords the end more so no one would swipe my idea . But i have to say I think most people cant work the lights well enough in poser to acomplish what we think you are asking of us. Mabye you need to post a pre made SPOT light or something.

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 1:42 AM

tasquah, Shadows aren't actually that hard. Just plop a box behind your figure and turn up the size of the map (from the default 256 to like 2000 or more) and viola, shadows. There's always RDNA's Infinity cove to use as a backdrop as well. There's always the option of using a white background color and deleteing ALL of the lights...you'll end up with a black and white image (bet no one thought of that one now huh?!) The idea behind this contest is to think OUTSIDE of the box with what Poser is thought to do, nto to just plunk some premade stuff and call it finished.

Just a quick little thing I pulled together from a previous image I had done. I originally had the background white and deleted all of the lights. brought the image into Photoshop, inversed, loaded the alpha channel, filled it with a gradient, used the liquify filter to push stuff around a bit to give it the tyedied look and viola. Not much else to it than that.

Now your cooking with Gas like Granny used to say. Lights are still pretty much a mystery to most folks , But they probley have a much better idea now.

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 2:50 AM

tasquah, I'm trying to push people to think of creative solutions to a given "problem" There are ways around the "mysterious" lights. This is just one of them. Try using 1 or 2 spotlights in different colors and "point them" at body parts. Use different intensities and map sizes. the higher the map size, the sharper the shadow, the lower the map size the "softer" (but often times jaggie depending on shadow size) shadow. Trial and error will give you a ton of different looks.

This is my entry its Richard Nixon. Thas was new to me a learning experience. The lighting was the biggest pain in the butt. Lights to high and you got Jay Leno to low and you got Rosie Odonnell. I slightly Lit Vicky so you could see i actually used a poser figure. The only pose work was the lettering , I just couldnt leave Nixon with out his famous saying Im Not A Crook!

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 07 January 2003 at 4:06 PM

Dreamland - that is most definitly Richard Nixon (Whom I don't remember offhand because I was born in 77 LOL but I've seen pictures) Totally amazing work!

One more for ya...was going through showing my brother how to do lighting and this was what I used to walk him through it. 2 spotlights pointed at the hand, 1 box prop, Vicki 2, and some creative camera angles. ;)

This is my second entry. This one got a bit complicated there is only one model casting both shadows that you see it took some tricky positioning of mutiple spot lights and many renders to get it right. The only post work is the letters at the bottom nothing else has been altered or added. This is actually fun to bad we can only post 2 i could keep doing this for days =)

Tashar59 ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2003 at 2:26 AM

I forgot, if you turn up the map setting on the lights you use, you will get a crisper shadow. Not sure about the shadow dial, I turned it up as far as 35000, didn't seem to make much difference. Tashar 59

creativechaos ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2003 at 3:48 AM

Hey, that's a really cool concept Tashar. :) Has a very spiritual ambiance to it. Love the color choices. And it's exactly what we're looking for. Good job!

Looks like everyone is waiting for the last minute to post. Just read my post on my render, looks a bit rude, sorry. It's hard to type when your cat is chewing on your arm, "feed me". Of course I had to or he would start jumping on the keyboard. Well I hope more try this. It's not as hard as it looks. Tashar 59

I decided to redo my first entry after reading that the map size affects the clarity of the shadow (I Didn't know that LOL). I also reduced the glare and made a colour change and put some clothes and hair on Vicki. Here it is...
