Subject: File installation

BOOMER ( ) posted Sun, 05 January 2003 at 7:50 AM · edited Sat, 27 July 2024 at 8:49 AM

I have a couplew of questions that I hope you guys can help me with. When installing file from, let's say, the free stuff area, do I just unzip them to my Poser file or must I somehow separate them. Because if that is the case, I think I will just about lose my mind. Second, when istalling these files, will they automatically go to their respective categories such as props, poses and so on. I got my hands on a few files and I want to install them, but I am just not exactly sure how to do it since I am still learning Poser. Thanks all. BOOM

There's a few people who've put up tutorials on where to install the files, the link above will take you to one of the best.

ps most freebies will have the folders already set so you just have to extract either to the poser directory or the runtime.

Cool. Thanks, c1rcle. I'll check it out.

And if you're on a Mac, just use Maconverter and Macinstaller, in that order. The latter will install everything in the correct file for you. Must be something like it for Windoze..... :)

Now you mention it Patricia, it's called P-Install. I'd forgotten about it, here's a link :)

or even PInstall ;) I do wish they'd put in an edit button.

OK, I'm on a PC so the MAC stuff won't work. Here's my issue and it's a BIG issue. I looked through the tuts and they don't address what I need to know. When I open a ZIP file (or whatever it is compressed with) it has all the files listed. No Runtime folder and so on. On a few files, I have unzipped them to my Poser 4 file and they work fine. On a others, no dice. Now, for those files, do I have to create folders for them and place them in certain directories and subdirectories, or should they automatically go in where they belong? The object, texture and so on. There are a number of files in my P4 file that do not work. I just can't find them anywhere when I open the program. Basically, where do the files go and how do I get them there because I just can't figure it out and it is killing me.

no probs Boomer :) even though the Dr was the most help :D Do a quick search for the word "Primer" in this forum, Dr Geep has a load of that type of tutorial & they're all excellent.

It's always best to unzip your Poser stuff to a Temporary Folder. Then read the "readme" file. The artists very often tell you where the files should go. The most crucial file location is the Geometry files, followed by the texture files. If your geometry files are not in the proper spot, your figure won't load. You can easily gain control of textures by getting CorrectReference (free).

Thanks again, guys. Roger, I did a quick search and found the site with CorrectRefernce on it, but it doesn't seem to be available at this time. I 'll try back later. Seems like would be the Tylenol for Poser headaches.

I did some digging, and can't seem to locate CorrectReference either. It was at Ron Knights' free site, but that went down awhile ago. It was available at Netherworks, but I don't see it there.
