Over the new few weeks you will start to see the second installment of Castle Dev's Egyptian project. These items will be larger temples from the middle dynasties, statues of several Egyptian gods (suitable for monuments or characters), new Egyptian architectural elements, and possilby more furnishings. Here is a sample mesh of one of the new temples. The textures are currently under development.

What reference are you using for the columns? They look sort of right, but sort of not right. Are you going for accuracy or look? Interested, not tryin to be rude, egyptology has always facinated me. Looks like they will be fun models when you get all done.

The reference book we have primarily been using is "The Monuments of Egypt" (Volumes I & II), and modeling form the color plates from the French Expedition in the late 1700's. This temples we have been modeling are from Edfou and Karnak. I don't have copies of the plate on my PC right now ( hardware upgrade gone awry) but if you are interested, I can find the plate # for this model.

Its got the sheer majesty and size that comes to mind when thinking and looking at these in books. As somebody who just finished reading a novel on this time reference in history, I've been itching to try something like this, just to get the thoughts of the head. Let us know when they are ready, bring Egypt on.....I have to make a Queen of the damned LOL.

YUM!!! Saving my pennies even as we speak! I love your Egyptian stuff and have been wanting some of those huge temples for ages....can't wait :)

dadamson ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 2:37 PM

Patricia, we have been working on a way to offer some of the REALLY large temples like Luxor that won't choke Poser with it's 125+ columns and dozens of statues. The limiting factor is system resources. We have some ideas, but the key will be working out the technical aspects and being able to produce renders that do not sacrifice quality.

Patricia ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 8:26 PM

Have you ever considered doing the project in two or more sections, so that folks can load as much of it as they need to show in one picture? I've built large temples in Poser that clogged even my iMac, only to discover that any given image required only a portion of the set....(can you say 'DUH!"?) So now I build modular sets and can work alot faster. And I like it even better when nice people like you build 'em for me! ;)

dadamson ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 9:13 PM

Hahaha! I left my partner a note with my idea of how we can do this. The rooms I am thinking of are ones where each room has 30-50 cloumns, so even if it were plit into 3/4 sections Poser would still have a cow. Especially when you consider you probably want Poser people, furnishings, customes, and hair as part of the scenes. I want to build this so you can something loaded in addition to our product. Some of my Poser people fully loaded up are over 30MB!

Patricia ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 10:08 PM

Why not split it further then? I found that not that many columns actually show up when you're using around an 80 to 120 focal length on the camera....and you know that at least 85% of the pics in the gallery are portrait shots that utilize those focal lengths or even tighter shots...... :) A dozen visible columns would give the impression of a much vaster structure.....whatcha think?

dadamson ( ) posted Wed, 15 January 2003 at 10:45 PM

Hahaha! You really want this, don't you? Let me see what my partner thinks of the idea I sent him where you can have it all with minimum overhead. Also, if you want to do close tight shots like that, you may be interested in the construction kit we plan to release soon that has all the walls , columns, and segments that make up the temples, Those you could easily place and use for portrait shots. That set will give you some flexibility when it comes to rendering a huge set that can be used for a walk-thru and the ever popular portraits of Vicky in a temple ....

Patricia ( ) posted Thu, 16 January 2003 at 12:41 AM

A construction kit would be great, but only if it incorporated some kind of easy-to-use measurement system......My least favorite part of making temples is trying to get things evenly spaced and aligned properly. To be a modeler must require vast, god-like patience... ;)

Hmmm. tell ya what... how about if I put you on the top secret beta test group? Send me an email at CastleDev@adamscon.com and let's talk!
