Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 1:43 pm)
This is a difficult one. If I download a zip with PNGs in it, I leave them and only unzip the RSRs since I have 4.03. However, people making things for distribution would probably want both - but I'd think they would always want the same picture in both RSR and PNG. I don't know if that helps or not... :-) Thanks for your good works, by the way!
I haven't installed the latest version yet and now am using only ProPack and Poser 5 with .png. BUT when I was using Poser 5 I had BOTH rsr and png in the folders. I needed the RSR for Poser 4 and the PNG for when I used Explorer (which I use for a lot of stuff even though I have P3DO). The difficulty was that I didn't know what I had when I used P3DO. I didn't know if I had PNG or RSR or Both because it just showed one picture. Since I wanted both, every directory I would use the function to create PNG from RSR AND RSR from PNG. It got very tiresome when I was installing stuff. My suggestion: Show BOTH rsr and png if they're there. Most people don't need both (unless they're nuts like I was when I ran Poser 4). This way they'll know which to delete if they don't need both. And/Or ask them what they want. Do they want to see both thumbnails, or only RSR, or only PNG. Don't make the decision for the user. Let them decide.
EnglishBob, in my opinion people have to have the same picture in both files, it is a Poser evidence. The option is just in case they have not the same picture or want to get rid of .rsr for example. Spit, I want to make clear it will be an option easy to switch on/off (i.e. from the tollbar). The goal is the offer another possibility than the way it is now.
Switch on : the way P3dO deals now.
Switch off:
1st soltuion:
a thumbnail for the .cr2 (icon), a thumbnail for the .rsr, a thumbnail for the .png
2nd solution:
a thumbnail for the .cr2 with default picture (.i.e .png with PPP and P5, .rsr with P3 and P4), the other picture alone.
Personnaly I prefer the 2nd solution, except that If you want to delete the picture alone you can't.

Why not have it be an program option? Let the user select if the thumbnail shown is the from .RSR or the .PNG file. And in the file details panel, show both for the current file. (And if you can get the RSR2PNG plug in to do subfolders when converting RSRs into PNGs, that would be a handy feature too.)
Quoting jkm: "(And if you can get the RSR2PNG plug in to do subfolders when converting RSRs into PNGs, that would be a handy feature too.)" :-) Maybe you could have it just tell which files are present (.png, .rsr or both) in the info panel(the area that tells the size and the last modified date, etc).
.
jkm, you're a genius of course yes this can be an option. I'm affraid not obvious to explain to but this is what should be done. Netherworks, this is a brilliant idea too - indeed. So, I'll do that all: [1] A switch like: Expand/Unexpand Poser files in the toolbar. The defaut switch position will be Unexpand (all files compacted) and there will be no way to save it as a permanent setting. Once clicked the button will stay Expanded for the remainder of the P3dO session. Not sure on Expand/Unexpand is there a better term to express that ? [2] The same for each individual Poser file, if you want to manage one Poser file in particular. [3] Once expanded it will show (1st solution): a thumbnail for the .cr2 (icon), a thumbnail for the .rsr, a thumbnail for the .png (2nd solution): a thumbnail for the .cr2 with default picture (.i.e .png with PPP and P5, .rsr with P3 and P4), the other picture alone. The 2 solutions are an option in the option dialog, no way to change on the fly. [4] List of associated files in the info panel. I love your proposals, they fit perfectly to what was missing in Poser file management. btw: "(And if you can get the RSR2PNG plug in to do subfolders when converting RSRs into PNGs, that would be a handy feature too.)" I've heard the sirens, it's a frequently asked feature. Not possible until 1.6.2 but I promise this will be a 1.6.2 feature.

This looks like a good plan to me. Just wanted to say that I use P3Do with Poser 5 and never had a problem. I just like the way it is :it shows 1 picture for each of my libray's item and that's great. I'd personally have no need for expanding to 3 thumbnails. I also do my own custom rsrs and I wish to keep them in the preview of Poser's library. So jkm's proposal of making this change optional just seem to be the thing to do. Compiler PS : merci de nous demander notre avis. C'est super sympa de ta part.
As you said Compiler the need is not obvious, the trick is to have only one thumb to deal with. But I understand that in some case: have both a .rsr and a .png and don't really which of the 2 has the good picture it can be embarassing of having only one thumb. This will rather be a switch than an option on/off, so you'll able to quickly switch from a P3dO point of vue to an Explorer point of vue. I needed your opinion because it wasn't clear in my mind and also it's always better to ask before than after ;)

And sincewe are discussing RSRs and PNGs, I have had trouble converting the RSRs that came with "Fairytale Costumes for The French Maid" package from DAZ into PNGs. P3dO just shuts down when I try to convert the "Costume Poses" folder for it. I've tried a few times on this folder and it always fails. It might be corrupted files (I haven't checked for that).
Ok, the crash might come from the .cr2 as well. When you click on the thumb without doing anything else does it crashes ? If yes the problem comes from the .cr2 (Awk plugin). Now if the crash only occurs while converting from .rsr to .png why don't you send me the .rsr. I will study it on my own computer and fix the bug. I don't need the .cr2 just the .rsr. If you can isolate the one that is troubleshooting, one .rsr is enough. My mail is yarp@senosoft.com

Since we are speaking of crashes. My P3DO crashes when I'm trying to delete a folder in my explorer (I use Power Desk) while P3DO is showing thumbnails of this folder. I guess it has something to do with Windows 2000 Pro. Can this be fixed ? (it's not really a problem, just an occasional nuisance) Thanks in advance Compiler
Like JKM every once in a while P3DO crashes on a folder. For me it happens when I select the folder, or if P3DO goes to the folder automatically after having completed a previous operation. I assume there's something it's reading when it first opens the folder that it doesn't like. Don't have an example right now, sorry.
Okay, I'm at home right now. I just opened up the problem folder in P3dO and clicked on each of the pose files individually. No problems. Feeling lucky, I decided to try the RSR2PNG conversion again on the folder. It worked perfectly. I have no clue why it works this time but not before. (Which is annoying because I know this information won't help you at all, yarp.)
Exactly jkm ;) Bad luck this time. Did you update the plugins recently, I mean the 1.6 plugin packs ? There's no evidence for me that Rsr2Png is crashy because the read algo is the same than the picture display in P3dO thumb view. Should you see a picture, it should load in Rsr2Png too. The png algo is even more stable. I now this is far from being enough to make a stable plugin but untill now I've had few reports of Rsr2Png crash - and a lot of AWK crash. Anyway, I have a crashy .cr2 here at home from Bahr after a discussion we had at PoserPros. This is better than nothing and this will drive us to an Awk update soon. If you have any problem don't hesitate to report it to me, I just need the supposed crashy file(s) to analyze it/them. yarp btw My production & Poser XP machine was off for 2+ weeks because I upgrade the processor to 1,5GB. Tonight a friend of mine helped me flashing the Bios and my machine is on again. Tomorrow morning I will code and code and code ;) ;) ;)

I've got the folowing mail - from the P3dO support form, please don't hesitate to post your sugestions : > Whenever there is a png and an rsr file together in a > directory, I cannot see the thumbnail. I have to erase > one or the other in order to view the thumbnail. Is this > bug planned to be fixed in the near future? Most Poser > products have pngs and rsrs both lately. As this is not the first time I hear from this complaint I decided to do something, but as this is also a major change in the way P3dO deals with Poser files I need your opinion first: " P3dO is supposed to merge .rsr, .png and Poser library files all together in order to ease the file management. I agree that this is problematic if you have different pictures in the .rsr and .png but then which picture should I give to the Poser library file, the .png or the .rsr ? I was just thinking about this earlier this week and because of your request here's what I will add to 1.6.2: You'll have the ability to dissociate pictures from a Poser library file but this means you won't be able to rename, delete and so all 3 files - even 2 of them - untill you ask P3dO to merge them again ?" ... and also that the Poser library file won't have any picture. I can add another switch like I use P3, P4, PPP or P5 and then associate to the Poser library file the default picture (i.e. a .rsr with P4) and only deal with those files ignoring the .png in that case. In the end it seems to me the better idea. Then ? btw: The support form : problems, bug, questions: http://www.senosoft.com/softp3doSupport.php The poll form (ideas, suggestions, opinion): http://www.senosoft.com/softp3doPoll.php Totally anonymous that means pugnacious yarp won't mail you again and again until you surrender ;) btw: Working hard last 2 weeks, here's what I did on 1.6.2: Large icons toolbar (customize), IE5 toolbars are back, new option dialog layout, got rid of cc3250mt.dll (this one is for me ;), don't hide folder panel when opening P3dO from shell, TheSims plugin nearly finished, about box for plugins, Explorer-like Open with menu,... Is that all ? I think I forgot some ;)
