What programs are good for creating models of people? Are there any helpful tutorials out there? I'd like it to work with poser as well, but that's not so important.

I've seen amazing models of people made with just about every modeling package out there. I don't think it's the software so much as the user's ability, patience, and practice. Just pick one and work at it. Unfortunately, there are no silver bullets. But I like Wings. :-) jon

I agree. It's not the tool but the artists ability to use the provided tools. Every 3d program does the same thing, manipulate polygons. trueSpace and the creators of poser have formed an alliance recently. So I assume that one day the two programs will work very well with each other. I use trueSpace and can say that it is more than capable of creating people. It has SDS which is a common tool to create heads and bodies. But in then end you'll have to download demos, try them out and pick out one that'll be cost effective for you. Lot's of options out there, including free ones. Vincent D. Brumback

I've heard that LightWave is used for the creation of a lot of figures that end up being used in Poser. And I agree with the sentiment that it's really about the artist and not the tools. I use LW, but for the life of me, I cannot produce a realistic human figure. :o( XSI, 3DS Max, Cinema 4DXL, Rhino, and Amapi are other applications where I have seen artists create some awesome figures. I guess you just need to find the tools that you are most comfortable with (for the budget you intend to invest in your art). - M

My vote goes to Wings3d too, it's just as capable as any other programme but it's free! I found it the easiest to learn and one of the most efficient. It doesn't render though but there are excellent free renderers out there too! Baz

I've been using wings for a while now, and I've been able to create objects that aren't too complex. I found a program for mapping the object so it can be used properly in poser (and be bendable). Thanks!
