Subject: Linux?

Anyone know what proggys work in Linux? I have a friend who uses 'nix who wants to get into 3d... She can't get Blender to work (it doesn't recognize her libraries), and she found a modeller... that has no renderer. So, she's looking for something totally different... preferably a complete package (modelling AND rendering)

Well I don't know about renderers though I believe Art of Illusion works on Linux, this is a complete modelling rendering and animating app. I haven't got the address but asearch on Google will turn it up. I can thoroughly recommend Wings3d which definately runs on Linux but this is just a modeller. Hope this helps! Baz

I was going to say Wings3D, but it sounds like you are looking for more than just a modeler, and Wings is just a modeler (and a great one). So, for a more rounded application, I suggest Art of Illusion. It's great too. jon

Wings is just the modeller, but you can export to Pov-Ray for rendering, which is also free. Plus there is a link to an export plugin at the Wings site for Pov-Ray.

Very true. But since he said "preferably a complete package" I think AOI is the natural choice here. No one loves Wings more than me, but I think AOI sounds like the better match in this case. Heck, get them both, and POV. Can't loose then. :-) jon

For Linux you can get the K3D package. It's free and good, although you have to get used to the GIMP like interface. A good renderer for Linux is the BMRT. Try to find it at www.sourceforge.net
